How goes the new project Astro

which really means is it primarily 6 string (and accompanying tuning) or 7?

Thanks!

Drummer is lined up but can't play till around New Years and working on a bass player. Hopefully working with the seven string. Aiming towards some low slow with a splash of blackened blast, overall hypnotic and heavy.

BTW that guitar is my #1 7 string. What ever ibanez pickups are in this thing are freaking insane, like somewhere around 20k output insane. Even without a booster every amp i plug into is on the verge of breakup from how hot they are. Even the black one which I thought I got the same pickups for needs a booster to get to the same output level. I can't thank you enough my friend for everything.

Oh and just a lil something.... I have your hand written / drawn letter that you sent with it posted on the wall in my basement right above my work bench. BECAUSE ITZ FUKKIN AWESOME!

Fantastic! How are those S-67s working out for you? I've been thinking of picking one up (they go cheap cheap cheap in the used market) and upgrading the pickups and maybe the tuners for a dedicated doom/sludge beastie.

I love them. They're heavy both in weight and sound. Really easy to setup and really stable, and thanks to the angled bridge you can intonate them down even further than F. Your plans address the only two issues I have with them, the pickups and the tuners. The blue one has upgraded tuners and is rock solid and the black one has stock tuners and a couple slip just a lil bit with play. The stock pickups are just horrid absolutely horrid, my two have ibby pickups in them. Their cheap (like 25$ a pair used) and some of them are really just rebranded dimarzio's which is what I'm sure is in the blue one as they are hot as hell and sound really really good. The only mod I had to do was file away some of the material on the back of the bridge so that the strings dont rest on it and cause unwanted overtones, the tailpiece location actually causes alot of break angle which is good for sustain and tension but when your using a .79 as the low string it wasn't intended for you gotta make it work.

I'm actually working on picking up a third cause their so cheap and I have a friend selling one with some BKP's in it. :yay: I'm gonna start hoarding them hahaha

Thanks! I'm probably not tuning any lower than drop A in the immediate future, so it sounds like a pretty good match for me. I hate uncovered humbuckers, which is something of a problem when you play 7-strings: the only good option apart from BKPs is those new Duncans, which I haven't had a chance to test yet (there's a Pegasus/Sentient active-sized set waiting to drop into my Epi MKH Les Paul 7), and in any event you'd end up spending 2-3x the used price of this guitar on pickups, which seems a little off. =)

Yeah thats one thing I didn't want to do was drop 300$ on pickups for a 75$ guitar which is why I got the ibanez pickups. The new SD Nazgul pickups look pretty cool but theyre about as expensive as a set of used BKP's which is where I'd rather drop the loot. I'm hoping I can score this other S-67 with the BKP painkillers for a good price, luckily its the same guy I got the NMV wizard off of. I am definitely interested in hearing what you think of the SD Pegasus / Sentient though.

The blue one you got me actually had Ibanez pickups in it and aftermarket tuners! Alot better bargain than i was expecting. Still trying to figure out exactly which ibby pickups they are cause they are amazing! But if for some reason I ever switch em for some BKP's I'll def let you know.

Yup DeArmond S-67, cheap too if you can find em. I paid 300$ total for both of them, including the pickups I got for the black one.

Skip, why does all your gear have to be so far away from where I am? I want to play it.

Nick is always trying to convince me to move East, but I hate snow. I would say I'd like to hang out with fellow doomers in the northwest, but I barely even get up to the SF bay area these days. I need to get one of the bands gigging regularly or start new stuff that will gig, so I can find excuses to hang out with people lol. The last time I got up to Portland was on tour in 2004, I liked it.
