Accepting that trump is the president because democracy and everything, and being happy about the nonstop unloading of poorly thought out executive orders are two different things.

Still one of my favorite skits ever.

Unrelated, but I saw this skimming some non-music content and thought it was quite good (about Trump's nonsense re: voter fraud)
For those of you who have never lived in a communist or post-communist state, this tactic may seem unheard of. In fact, this is a textbook case of how the totalitarian government communicated (and in some cases, still does) with the people. Repeat a lie until you're blue in the face in order to establish it as the new normality. Weave in just about enough truth to seed some doubt. Reap the benefits.

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

This is not just problematic. It's horrifying. And for some of us, it's what we left behind to come to the US.

Also, this's not surprising despite Kellyanne Conway telling everybody that people didn't care:

But seriously, you've moved the goalposts a bit. Race isn't a class system. Not in 2017 USA.

Yes, discrimination will continue to exist and manifest in the individuals who make up the bureaucracy. Presently, amorphous bureaucracies even on the local level are also made up of diverse individuals. Go to your social security office, borough hall, police/fire station, dpw, post office, dmv [sorry], and take a look around. I know you live in one of the whitest states but cmon it cant be that different from the tristate area. :idk:

I grew up around other kids of all shades, on the wrong side of the tracks in an affluent small town/huburb of NYC with immigration and foreign students every year since kindergarten. The well-manicured hands live in the hills, the dirty nailed hands in the valley. Exceptions, obv. Not racial. Broken homes all over. We were all together at public school. The most privileged (or misbehaved) went away to private school.
Anyway, in my fam I'm 2nd and 3rd gen American. My various ancestors came to NYC in the early 20th, broke. Hard workers. Some refugees. The discrimination and conditions they initially endured were brutal, yet considerably better than hiding under a bed because the young turks are out. Working on the subway and life as a street vendor not so bad by comparison. Gradually situation improved and property was bought. MADE IT!
100 years ago opportunity existed for them, despite individuals with bias opposing their effort. This is a different world than that was, but opportunity still exists for individuals determined to create something great.

I understand the "race isn't a class system anymore" argument
and the "Based on our history Race IS a class system" argument

The question I would have is, when did this switch happen?

And if we are still feeling the impacts of a time when race in our country was a class system, how do you move past it?

Eradication of all humans.

On a more serious note, who fucking knows. I can see people saying that Race is a class system, but I feel that a lot of people just straight up forget that there are massive amounts of people in former coal mining areas that are just broke as fuck now because there is nothing for them. They grew up to work in a dying industry that (fucking I hope) should die out forever soon. I think that's a self-serving cycle that will be close to impossible to break out of. People are stuck in mass swathes of opiate addicted areas making dick for cash and really don't have a way out. Just replace "the ghetto/hood/whatever" with "the mountains".

Just kill all humans.

Well it's interesting, right, because I live in one of the only places in the state that has any actual diversity -- which gives me something of an insight into the way race still operates as a class, particularly when you start to get out of the relatively metro area.

I don't disagree with the social mobility -- I'm just pointing out that the trappings of it still appear to be rooted in Leave it to Beaver rather than, say, The Jeffersons

:p

And I would respond by steering you back to the more lifelike direction of Married With Children
There's a scene where Jefferson Darcy removes his NO MA'AM shirt, revealing a YES MA'AM undershirt when Marcy catches him in it.
DO YOU IDENTIFY WITH THE METAPHOR?

That picture inspired me...to figure out if they're on a riser or if Ed O'Neil is really that short. It's the former.

This made my day:

If history has marginalized a certain race for ages and we accept that people born in families with academic parents are more likely to become educated themselves, and further assume that college education will lead to higher wage in the future then it's quite obvious that race history still has effects today :idk: hopefully it'll change in the future
