I'd always gigged with two basses, not for different tones, but to keep them in different tunings. Although, having one as a backup was always a good secondary reason to have them there. But when I bought my G&L this summer, I sold off both of my other basses, so I only have one now. I've broken strings in practice before, but somehow never in a gig. I am a little afraid of breaking a string, because I play with a pick and I play really fucking hard. I always bring two extra sets of strings with me to every gig, but I've been lucky so far. I'd love to have a second bass to bring to gigs, but I just can't afford it right now. So I'll keep living dangerously.

I think I've only taken two basses once or twice in my life. I've broken strings on stage, no big deal you just do you best till the song is over and replace it... Actually I have played a lot of times without extra stings... I guess I've been lucky...

Electric and Upright to Jazz gigs. Otherwise it's one or the other. Usually my J bass for electric.

hurm. yah. i think just always keeping a beater 6'er (i like the Dean Edge's a'ight, decent value for the money after a good setup) in the car or van is smart. but i don't worry about my main bass going down at all.
i'm with you Ben From Another Mother, i can only afford one nice bass right now, and i trust it. but i don't play super hard. even when i'm super into it i bang on the body more than the strings. and my slapping is so under developed that i'm not goin crazy hard at that either.
good to know fellas. y'all are great reassurements. shuddyp. that's a real word.

I remember getting a lot of mileage out of their Grassroots tape back in the day. Cars with tape players ftw.

Amber came on in Buffalo Wild Wings the other night. Surprised me a bit.

man. that brings back so many high school memories. never really dug them, but my best friend at the time would NOT stop playing them. the music was..... a'ight on some tracks. singer and I've Never Even SEEN A Black Person rapping style killed any interest in them though.
Primus, Korn, Deftones, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, Bjork, PJ Harvey. that was the soundtrack of my youth.

Amber is the only song of theirs I've even heard. It will probably stay that way too.

not missing much. sorries Warwickah. they kinda... suck.
but i never snowboarded. i'm not really the target audience.
i tried snowboarding ONCE. fuck going up the mountain in that rickety ass death bitch. i'm so afraid of heights. me and my grrL took an hour introduction class and i thought all the skating i did as a youngin would translate. NOPE. teacher dood was hella cool, at the end of the group lesson he pulled me aside and said, "i've never said this to anybody, but you should NOT snowboard. you're gonna.... you're gonna hurt yourself. BAD.".

As a snowboarder, I take personal affront to the idea that we like 311.
But you and I have overlapping youth tastes in tunage, so maybe there's hope for us.
