All these companies like reddit, facebook, twitter, google, et al whining about how this will be the end of 'a free and open internet'...pfft get fucked.
Still waiting for those videos, BTW.
Reddit, Facebook, etc. Are going to be fine. They're just complaining because they'll have to pay more money to ensure the same speeds that they have now. It hurts their bottom line. The places that are going to get really screwed are smaller websites that can't afford to compete with, say, Amazon.
I'm still not sure I understand your logic about exactly what's happened with this ruling.

See, I don't think these two views, necessarily, relate the way you think they do.
Government is restricting out liberties for power, right?
Well, that power is partially attained by being in the pocket of corporations (such as ISP's).
So, when a certain government mandate prevents those corporations from doing whatever the fuck they want, the corporations don't like it. So they launch a campaign to convince you that the thing that prevents them from doing whatever they want is really government overreach to keep you from getting the iPhone10k™ rather than to keep them from, effectively, forcing you to buy the iPhone10k™ rather than stick to your Samsung∞™ because you think the iPhone10k™ is kinda shitty and too slow to watch porn on (this is just a metaphorical example, I don't actually think that ISP's are terribly concerned about which phone you use, they're concerned about you using their products & services and only their products & services).
It's restricting our liberties as a people, which in turn removes the power from our hands. We no longer are given an option of being "free" because our freedoms continue to be taken.
I'm not really following your analogy about the phones. I think I kind of get what you're saying there, but I don't fully follow.
The Government, as it exists right now, is being corrupted by men and women who have it in their best financial interest to make things easier for large corporations because 1. they own stocks in them and 2. they more than likely are receiving large sums of money in pay offs. It happens all the time and there is plenty of evidence.

Acting like Net Neutrality is The Government's way of trying to rule the internet or whatever (assuming that's what you're suggesting) is like viewing anti-trust laws as The Government's attempt to take over all business or that Glass-Steagall was The Government's attempt to control the country's wealth.
It's another step towards moving the collective whole's thinking patterns. Just think about it for a minute. Why in the hell would they even care about doing this unless it favored something they are doing? They have been brainwashing us for as long as they have existed. It's willfully ignorant to ignore that. The Government is extremely under handed and they lie constantly. Is it really far fetched to believe they want to control us?

People are being brainwashed by social media because they're too lazy to not be brainwashed by it.
While the government is definitely watching you and what you post, they're not what's convincing people that Nazi's are just misunderstood, that beating the shit out of people that aren't communists is okay, and that the Earth is flat.
People being too stupid to utilize critical thinking at any venture is why so many people are "being brainwashed".
I'm not entirely sure I agree here at all. I think they have their hands in almost everything now. Their tiny little fingers are constantly trying to bend mans will towards what they want.
I mean, we probably won't agree on this at all and that's totally fine.

Well... yeah.. I mean right now we are in the middle of a power take back to bring us back to a rule of elite like over 100 years ago. We are the unwashed rabble getting in to way of them enjoying a unfettered jin and tonic while they watch us toil away and treating them like our true loads and masters as which we should.
jrfox92 I think is talking about social media addiction yes? and I agree with him if that is what he means but but I also get what you are saying as well..

The biggest issue I have with your argument, jwar, is you seem to think that the bad parts of the government are liberal.
Net Neutrality is bad because liberals like it and want it, no?
Repealing isn't bad even though the whole situation surrounding it is, for lack of a better word, a plot by Trump's administration/the Republican party (look at Ajit's history).
I mean, who fucking thinks that the guy nominated by Donald Trump to chair the FCC is a good choice and will be fair? Has Trump nominated ANYONE that knew how to do their fucking job other than by totally dismantling everything that would allow their specific agencies to run properly and in a way that helped the American public?

What I don't really understand about a lot of arguments that are made about freedom and liberty, and that the government is too controlling is how one can have freedom if one is not guaranteed the necessities of life as a matter of human rights. If food, housing, healthcare, education, communication and travel aren't guaranteed to every human you can't have freedom for the majority of people. Without these guarantees we are forced to work for survival for people that likely have opposing interests to ourselves, and if people speak out against capitalists they can lose their jobs, which literally threatens their life. It seems to me much of the complaints about freedom is really about freedom for the rich.

I don't want to argue my point because it's too early to do so. I'm saying what I think will happen, and I could be wrong. I'm not sure where the anti liberal comment is coming from though? I am not a liberal but I'm not anti liberal. I just have differing views on things than others. I mean, obviously.
Also, Bruce, comparing to Y2K literally makes zero sense man. This is not even close to the same thing.

I think he means that we'll look back at the silliness of this discussion of five years, vastly overestimating the possible impact of net neutrality.
Does anyone have the full picture on this? It kinda seems like everyone is picking and choosing information relevant to themselves (not just here; everywhere). I don't think I've seen a clear picture or interpretation of this legislation that extends beyond the personal. I haven't done my due diligence...just looking for some comprehensive summaries that I'm sure don't exist because we live in a bizarro world freed from the shackles of truth and justice.

I think the reason that discussion about what the possible impacts may be are varied and unfocused is because that reflects the nature of the issue. It's not about enacting a specific rule or repealing a law against a specific action, it's just the FCC taking their hands off the wheel and saying "telecom companies got this, no need to have regulation" and then a lot of guesses as to what COULD happen because of that. It's a vacuum, there's no way to know what will fill it. It's possible that nothing will change. It's possible that things could drastically change, but consumers will never know about it or it's possible that the entire structure of how people access the internet could change. That's kind of the whole point, some people think rules are controlling everyone...some people think rules keep people safe. We're talking about the basis for all modern political thought in the US, pretty much. People's opinions and speculation are going to vary wildly, depending on the political and philosophical lens they look through. Probably on what you distrust more...big business or big government.

Sure. All dystopias tend toward totalitarian logic, right? Either in the hands of the free market or in the hands of governmental powers. So do all utopias...not that I'm making the case that we're headed there. The trick is that the shift from one to the other is usually a really subtle one.
