Get to do some travel which is awesome but also mostly work from home which is even better !
BROTHER!

I'm a PhD candidate for Computer Criminology, I'm writing a thesis in conjunction with a criminal psychologist about online communities. (No, not you guys)

As for job, I've been a data analysts for a software company that specializes in combining things like census data, traffic data, ans school/business locations to determine how much money travels in a street and how old the people with said money are. Last semester I taught databases, but more qualified people than I stepped in and I was not renewed for more semesters. Right now I'm unemployed, but that'll hopefully change soon...i hope, it's disheartening how much "you're over qualified" refusals I've gotten. :(

I'm a volunteer vet tech and home health aide for geriatric canines. I also have a paid "real job" to support this dream job. Which is a good thing, because the dream job is damned expensive.

I'm a director at a design agency. Work mostly on video game brands [like publishers and first party] as well as the franchises, titles, studios. Also, being in Portland, there's usually some sports lifestyle work in the mix.

It's fun, creative work, and all my clients are surprisingly good people to work with.

I mooch off my wife while mired in electronic R&D, which slowly veers toward manufacture & distribution of circuits for wonderful people like you!

Wow, lots of advanced degrees mentioned in here. I have a phd in a chemistry/biophysics background and am the operations manager for a nanotechnology group at a university. Lots of microscopes and proposal writing, and some teaching.

I'm a Master Control Operator. Much that same as above. But, in a much smaller market.
I worked in Master Control for like 8 years when I started in TV. I used to tell people I got paid to watch TV. I liked it (and it was a nice change from working in the web development salt mines for years) but I'm much happier now...

If you're ever looking to make a move, we are always looking for good operators... :poke:

Haha, I tell them I'm paid to push buttons. I've been doing it for 15 years...

Pushing the button is 5 cents, knowing which button to push is the rest of the dollar.

Sorry to hear it. Aim high, duder. I gotta tell you, I thought about abandoning academe when finishing up grad school. I knew I had to get my family back to MI so that we could take care of some sick relatives, so I just started spraying applications at everything I could find. Needless to say, I got 0% of those jobs.

But then I said 'fuck it,' and applied for something in my field that I figured was waaaay out of my league. I got the gig, and am up for a bigger gig real soon.

Anecdotal, I realize, but a PhD is not something that anyone wants under them--it's perceived as a pretty big threat, warranted or not. Only really good/forward thinking hiring managers will take that risk. Go big. If you take people at their word that you're overqualified, then go for broke.

I used to work in libraries.
I'm a full-time parent now.
I'll probably go back to school in a couple of years. Maybe something computery? But maybe I'm too old for that?

I'm a photographer who works inventory for a high volume car dealer & its sister stores, which is probably more rewarding than I ever would have imagined (I still drive the car I inherited after high school). It's salary w/ a flexible work schedule, & both I & the other 2 photographers on staff all have MFA degrees in photo, so I don't feel so out of place all of the time. All the cars have pedals, though.

edit: Sorry! Here's what I meant by MFA:
