I'll take it a step further and say that sounding like shit is one of the major dividers between what constitutes screamo and what constitutes post-hardcore
If they had good gear and good chops, they would be post-hardcore
For example, Alexisonfire are not generally considered screamo... because they can play their instruments

For some reason I feel like posting the post-hardcore band I used to be in too. We toured a lot maybe one of you guys were at a show? We definitely had a slight bit of toan chasing, I was rocking a Epiphone Tele into a Marsha JCM2000, the other guitarist used an Orange Rockerverb 100 and a Tele, the bass player had an Ernie Ball Sub Bass and a Peavey Mark VIII into an Acoustic 810 combo. On our "reunion/let's do this one more time" tour he was using a Meatsmoke full stack and the other guitarist used just a Sunn Beta Lead. I still used my shitty Marshall but goddamn if I don't love that thing.
Edit: I can't make YouTube go

Live like me. Flip everything. Romanticize nothing. Accomplish nothing.

pg99 is straight up CIJ J. Mascis Jazzy > Dual Rec > shitty 4x12's. While they may have had 3 guitarists (more at some points) 90% of what you hear is Mike on the recordings, and thats all he used.
CoC I don't quite remember what they used but i seem to remember just Gibson The Paul > JCM 800 (might have been a 900, it was def not a DSL / TSL / whatever bullshit). It's been 15 years since I've seen them so memory is a lil foggy.

Awesome! Are you gonna use the bass VI as a bass or like a really low tuned guitar? And if ya don't mind me asking, what's the Dirge pedal?

I mainly use it as a big guitar to take up the place of both. Like mostly two piece bass/drum or three piece bass/drum/vocals & noise projects. The Dirge pedal is a clone of the Devi Ever karaoke party overdrive with sag on a footswitch and an input gain control (Skully did you do anything else to it?), it's a rad blocky overdrive that sounds great with the V4 and is similar enough to my Fuck that I don't have to move it between boards.

maybe you can tell from this video?
I love how the bassist and drummer are just shootin the shit for 3 minutes
Looks like the stage right guitarist is using a silverface fender head Maybe even a freakin RocPro 1000 or whatever that cheap fender head from the 90's was.
The bassist... Oh the bassist.... His name is Kevin Longendyke, I went to school with him (and most of the members of pg99). He's an interesting chap, huge scenester douche, but interesting chap..... Him and the drummer of PG99 (Johnny) have a new retro rock group called The Ar-kaic's.

I beg to differ. Alexisonfire is to screamo what Nickleback is to 90s grunge. Just mpo, ymmv, and all that crap...I know I'm exaggerating a bit with the nicklenback comparison, but that's just to make my point...
Which is that a lot of those so called "post hardcore" bands are way too far from anything I consider punk. Over-produced recordings without any rough edges at all. Very polished and hifi, almost in a radio friendly pop rock kinda way. 26 tracks of pianos and acoustic guitars...Pretty much just the exact opposite of what drove me towards hard core back in the day. Less pristine toanz and 'chops', but more heart, balls, and tunes that aren't written with a music carreer and $$$ record deal in mind...
Again though, sorry if I'm stepping on anyone toes, to each their own...

I thought he used some sort of LTD Les Paul shaped thing? Was the Mascis even around before PG99 broke up? He uses/used the jazzmaster in Pygmylush and maybe Mannequin but yeah.
City of Caterpillar was at various points Les Paul, SG, or at the end both dudes had Rics. One of them used a dual rec. Bassist used a Gibson Ripper at some point before moving on to a G&L which he also used in Malady I think. I just wanted to mention Malady because that RECORD TOTALLY SLAYS.

OMG no! Now, mind you, note: Alexisonfire is not "real" screamo at all. I mentioned to make that point. But they are so beyond real punk. I've seen them a few times and their shows leave no doubt at all as to how hard they can really be. When I think of "melodic hardcore" I think of AOF as my go-to band. Here in Canada they are absolute royalty!
It's cool if you don't like them but don't dis them. I can't really think of any better songwriters making heavy music in the emo-ish milieu
Plus George liked my Jawbreaker shirt LOL Obvi I am a fanboy
