Down here it's cool not to make your band a business and if peeps at the show don't know who you are then all the better...

Yeah, that's what it sounds like. I think it is a hipster thing. I don't see why a band wouldn't just say "we're Crappy Local Band X, thanks for coming out" at the end of their set besides being too cool to do it. It's like in the movie Swingers where he says: for some reason, all the cool bars in Hollywood have to be hard to find, and have no sign.

man how could I have forgotten these guys:
much like Iggy doesn't own a shirt, Lemmy doesn't own a non-Motorhead shirt.

if you're going to start a band with a drummer Buddy - make sure he cares more about making Songs. than - making shirts and merch.

Yeah I definitely agree, I just kind of think that having the listener do some leg work if they're interested in a band isn't necessarily a bad thing. Especially when it's as easy as:

I don't think I have ever played a show in my bands t-shirt
only been in a couple bands where t-shirts were made
and usually you make enough to sell and don't want to give up that cash to wear one yourself
I did wear festival t-shirts where I could
if the festival promoter gave me a t-shirt I would wear it
I have also rocked a dirge t once in a while,
I don't know that a band wearing their own shirt bugs me or doesn't but me
when I meet new customers or vendors I hand them my business card
so I guess if you are in a business repping yourself makes sense
