I think keeping as much of it in-house as possible is always pretty paramount in stuff like this. I vote sure.

+1 for kbi photo art

if i use the piece I recorded today mine will be 13-ish minutes long. i was trying to go for shorter but meh. if the 20 or so of us all actually submit there's no way that's gonna fit on one CD let alone two.
UglyCasanova wrote:If there will be CD's made, it would be cool if people listed the gear they used too. I'd love flipping through a little booklet while listening. If it's not too much of an expense, of course. I'd chip some money in to make that happen.
everyone should submit a picture of the setup they used with the signal chain written on it, then we could do a pdf booklet with it or something to flip through for boners.

*computerdrone boner*

i was tossing up whether to use Max/MSP, that would have made for a pretty out of place gear shot.

This is a fantastic idea!

My recording situation has been disrupted (had to return borrowed equipment).
So I don't think I could participate. But I'm interested in listening to the results.

Maybe the title for this ILF drone comp should be "DronerBoner"?
:idk:

Before opening this thread I had a heavily detuned groan already loaded in the s950, looping through my new mixer with a DMM, RRR and Misty Cave on inserts. This will soon be timestretch'd and fed through the power amp of a tube PA pushing a ported 15, miked with the other tube PA > DMM > LFLJ > DMM signal saturating the input transformer's core. Then the LFLJ will feed an accompanying loop. The signals will be probably be run through the 1176 and then put to tape. Or something to that extent. Dat saturation.

Doubtful I'll do something longer than 5 min....but I'm not getting on any "boner comp" foh with the goofy forum grab-assery this time...my droanz'r serious af and mean business :zen:

So, uh... for people who never really record or play with others... how does one go about hitting the golden -3 to -6 peak thing?

:erm:
I use audacity for this. After your track is ready to go select all and use the normalize effect, and you can set what you want the peak db limit to be. Simple and free.
Nice! Been using Audacity for a long time, just didn't know exactly what peeps were getting at. Any fear of the normalize action reducing dynamics?
I would not normalize the track... that's doing more to the dynamics than you think and is completely unnecessary, especially if its getting mastered.

The easiest way is to put a limiter plug in on your master track in your daw and set the thresh hold to -3db, then you reduce the input gain or the track volumes until you see it never or just every once in a while bounce off of it. If you reduced track volumes then you can remove the limiter plug in and be good to go, if you use the input gain in the plug in to reduce volume than leave it there but raise the threshold up to -2db without touching anything else. That way even if it peaks over a lil its not detrimental, and who ever is mastering will have tons of headroom.

If your using your phone theres no help for you unfortunately and we'll do the best we can with it.
THANK YOU! will edit this into the OP.

I was already planning on handling the packaging/art side of things but I am totally cool with someone else running it. variations could be tight, too, GY!BE style. pictures of set ups is an awesome idea, I have a laser printer at my shop I don't mind abusing so we can actually hold something. awesome shit so far guys, you rule.

I like the physical media with pictures of the rigs idea. Would be cool if we had some way to make a booklet with like 3 built in cd sleeves to put the music into.

yep yep planning on making some cool custom packaging for it, just need to know how much sound were actually working with first

as far as costs go, it's too early to tell. I should be able to come up on most of the CD's free as well as the printing. I'm going to try and reuse some stuff I have laying around for the actual packaging. so we'll see how many people actually put up sounds and how long it all is together. I do know that I don't want to make more than 50 :snax:

Agreed that main package artwork/design aside it would be really cool for everyone to include a picture for the insert whether it be gear or mood pic or whatever.
