I know. And Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. And The Groundhogs. And Ten Years After. And early Jethro Tull, and I suppose you could put Free in there, too.

etc, etc, et al.

Not to be a hater, but there is a massive difference between a band like Cream (who are on their own planet entirely, even within that scene) and a band like Black Sabbath.

The best way to be innovative is to do lots of drugs (like all of them; not just weed) and be really tormented.

I agree with everyone here I think which is a nice change on the internet. Trying to force it is lame, many "new" styles were never that new, because music is more of a gradual shift than jumps by a few geniuses than people like to think.

I'm also going to add that in a way, originality is overrated. I'd rather listen to a truly amazing song in a well used style than a band trying something new and sure it's innovative but does it sound good?

Another good way to come up with new styles is to play an already existing music but not look the part.

Like Scarfcore. Hardcore played by guys in scarves and sweeter vests.

Jockwave. Punk Rock played by dudes in letter jackets.

DOUCHECANOECORE

These are just assholes trying to rip off Bad Religion (all of them).

If I ever meet Greg Graffin in real life I'm going to ask him if he still thinks religion is bad.

You just described the 80s for Devo, once the musical originality had gone.

This. Usually with a little digging you'll find most of those "geniuses" that revolutionized music were influenced by or just straight up stealing from more obscure contemporaries. This stuff happens gradually in the underground by little steps over a few years, people pushing each other (usually by competing with each other) in their communities until they've created their own little niche.

Pushing yourself into a new direction is a great thing, but it seems to me when you start overthinking stuff it starts to get sterile.
