Which one of these pedals do I want? I want something for ridiculously slow stoner metal/sludge. I don't think I want to spend $300 on an EF Black Acid, so I see a decent option for half the price.
I'd say outta this bunch, the Black Acid and the Warthog (Bee Baa clone) both bring the stoner/sludgy heaviness equally well! Just thick, brutal fuzz tones with the Warthog being the meaner sounding of the two with more clarity. The Fuzzmaster portion of the Beast Master is killer too but not as much tweaking capability, sorta all mean all the time with that one.
Or just talk to LaoWiz about what your after specifically and go custom.
I wouldn't blow $$$ on a EFE Black Acid tho, awesome pedal but the price is madness and the enclosure is monstrous! You may have a moral obligation against clones of currently available pedals but it's just a Fuzz Face so I said fuck it, flipped mine for the price I paid and went the clone route which came in about half price with skully's build and LaoWiz's enclosure.
The warthog is basically a slimmed down version of the bee baa. Omitted the boost option and changed the mid scoop. It's my favorite sounding fuzz right now as its super heavy but there is some nice clarity with chords. Of all the old school fuzzes I like this one the best. But not so much in the normal mods mode. I like new the scoop on that one, which is just the fy2 scoop, but on a trimpot and I set it somewhere in the middle to not get that full on dark scoop sound. That may be a good onboard control replacing the tone control.
The double beat used to be my fav, but now it's more to me a good fuzzy overdrive with some nice blown speaker sounds if controls are pushed. The FM2 is just mean and machine like, that one should probably have a variable scoop, as well.
I really want to start paralleling fuzzes more. The parallel box I have is good for testing but needs some improvement. Some of these fuzzes in parallel sound great.
that multiplex has been haunting my dreams ever since you first posted about getting it months ago. it looks and sounds so awesome. all of those look amazing. that's one amazing box to get in the mail. you're a lucky bastard to have worked all that out. can't wait to hear about more of these fuzzes.

Josh Pelican wrote:Lao, what do you recommend? Black Acid or Warthog? You make the Warthog sound pretty good.
I just want some fucking balls. Conan, Fister, Dopefight, Bongripper, Slapdragger, Sunn... Those are some of the influences.
I'll need to have a listen to some of those, I've heard Conan and Sunn. I haven't heard the black acid as skully built that circuit but it's a fuzz face with bigger in and out caps, I think.
Maybe warthog and Fuzzmaster 2 n 1. Would be brutal.
I would recommend a muff type tone to accompany one of the more octavey japanese fuzzes. But, that's just my two cents. Also, Double beat going into big muff would be reeeeeeeediculous.

I can't believe I ain't never built a muff. Maybe it's time.

I'd say a high gainer with bax and clipping stages would be cool but the BAT Badascan already covered that ground pretty much.
You can also throw a FAC rotary control on there, makes every fuzz better imo. Or maybe a dual pedal with a badass muff involved or even better yet, one of those parallel fuzzes you've been talking about! All wrapped in a sexy ass LaoWiz enclosure.

Yeah, there's so many muffs out there. I've only played a Bat Ltsr (I think it was Wino's, my neighbor was playing with him for awhile and was borrowing the ltsr), a Whisker Biscuit (muff with the bazz fuss front end), and I repaired one of the new school black muffs. They all sounded kinda boring to me. Is there a destroyer muff version I should build? I have always wanted to try one with more gain stages, maybe I'll do that....
