I run my rainbow machine into my boss slicer in 6 songs. It sounds insane.

My Digitech PDS 20/20

not that it would be gimmicky and unusable but the terribly calibrated controls make it kinda hard to use

I've really been on the fence about the Freeze. It tempts me so.

I usually find most modulation sounds (phase, flange, chorus, ring mod, etc.) to be "gimmicky" when they're super noticeable. But making them less pronounced by putting them before distortion or blending in some clean signal and I love using them (usually... Digitech Hyper Phase still ain't very subtle before distortion). I love using my Ibanez PM7 pre-fuzz, shifting the incoming harmonic content to add movement without that opening/closing vowel sound you get using a phaser post dirt, which I fucking hate...

Also, grail flerb on the EHX Cathedral is my secret weapon

hop over that fence man. the freeze is an excellent pedal all around and has inspired me to play things i normally wouldn't. it can also be had for relatively cheap.

Is there anything similar to it?

The freeze is also a pedal that just makes you want to play

I can't tell you how many times I've gone to freeze a note with some specific purpose in mind, only to wake up dazed after several minutes of rambling improvisation

But it's a pain to get a hold of one. Freeze is easily a better option. Also keep in mind I'm a bassist :animal: Which has never stopped me before, but shit gets MUDDY quick.

When I first got my Phantom Ring I thought I'd use it mostly for accents and not regularly.

Now it's basically my pre-amp, so many tones easily dialed out of it and all of them unique and nasty.

I just sold mine cause I hadn't used at all. Now that I'm kinda getting into different sounds I kinda wish I'd kept it.

definitely my DOD buzz box, frostwave resonator and trogotronic 655. I don't use them for band stuff that much, but anything involving noise whatsoever is going to have all three of them. And that's pretty much all I do when I play at home these days.

I feel no pedal is gimmicky if it actually is useful for getting a sound.
