"would you rather have a band...": i go back and forth on this. nowadays i'm really paranoid about my material and vision, so i'd go with "sole creative driver." if someone else had material, i'd insist on arranging it so it went with my idea of what the group should sound like. i'm too old for compromise now. in an ideal world i'd love to find creatively compatible people, but that's not too likely in my age cohort...not many people in their fifties enjoy My Bloody Valentine, and if any do they probably don't also like Boards of Canada and the Grateful Dead. and the Impressions.

one custom instrument or five decent ones? five. with the right five i can cover an entire band's worth of tracks and record my own record.

one great work or a successful career of pleasant work? i'd rather know i was doing a consistent level of good work than have to live the rest of my life in the shadow of the One Good Thing I Did knowing everything else i'd done was shit. it'd be like spending your life thinking about the girl you lost when you were twenty.
