It's called suspension of disbelief. Most Zombie flicks are allegorical (at least, the moderate-to-good ones), so spending time on the Zombies would detract from the main story (and be boring as shit).
Now, if you wanted to argue for Zombies being a shitty antagonistic force, I'm right there with you. Using zombies is lazy, unless you flip the genre/expectation on its head--ala 28 Days Later, the first film that featured Fast Zombies™ (as well as being one of the first widely seen theater films that was shot entirely on digital cameras).

If the show was all about Daryl arrowing zombies and being a general badass and they cut out pretty much the rest of the cast I'd probably watch it more often.

I guess I see suspension of disbelief being contrary to proper allegory. Making things more real only makes the message more powerful. Appearing to not care about plot just seems to debase the message.
That said, I love Kafka, so I can understand proper use of lack of information.

It's a construct. You don't ask how the monolith lands on earth in 2001, do you?
Unfortunately, it's not the 70's anymore... when you could get away with, say, an hour before the inciting incident (ala Rocky). You've got to cram at least a semblance of a conflict into about fourty five minutes of screen time for an hour long TV show.

This season has been great so far, the character transformations are much welcomed. Can't wait to see where this season goes

first season great
second too much drama, too long
third... well... the last episode was absolutely redundant and pointless

the only point was apparently pirating one of the guys up

I thought the last episode did a good job of showing what an odd case rick & the gang are...the prisoners just sorta watched in astonishment the first time they cleared out those walkers.
It's also developing more of the cold/darker side of Rick...he's talked the talk but he actually did something (sorta) questionable this time.
They also did an ok attempt to make some of the more useless female characters um...useful (oh hey Carol can suddenly do surgery...remember all that time Herschel spent training her? No? Well he did...and Laurie saved a dead man! awesome).

I quit reading the comics during the prison part. It got fucking ridiculous.
