Someone who's apparently a semi-famous Youtuber (Andrew Huang) made a video about the Plonk and basically half of that thread is people complaining because that guy made a video about a module and it's not to their taste. Or he's not "real" enough. Or he got the module for free and not them. Or he's too young. Etc.
That place always had some bad apples but it got worse and worse. Ugh. No wonder I basically stopped reading/posting there.
So, I didn't know who Andrew was a month or so ago and stumbled across his Eurorack video through Reddit. I saw his follower count and thought it was rad that there'd Be a lot of people being introduced to Eurorack because of him.
Because his viewership is high, people feel an increased need to criticize ...when they should be stoked that the community could possibly grow because of his videos...
It's like the people who don't want their favorite band to be successful, because then those "other people" will get to listen to it, too. But I was here first !!!!!!
Bleh. Fart.

I've watched a few of his videos over the past year. I think I found him looking up videos on the OP-1.
His last video turned into the same type of thread. It's kind of a bummer. I don't like all of his music. But he puts out some interesting videos too. There's one where he starts a song with a few chords, then has viewers participate in finishing the song. Then he breaks down the percentages of what people did with the chord progression and talks about it.
The guy knows some shit and works hard at making it easily digestible. I guess some people are put off by his pop sensibilities, video, marketing, editing styles. And I get it, but c'mon. How about some constructive criticism instead of dumping all your insecurities on the guy?

While 33 is not old by any stretch of the imagination, Andrew Huang has been making successful music videos/content for over a decade now, calling him too young is dumb as all shit.

What's funny is that, as far as Andrew Huang videos go, this one is pretty technical. I guess people don't like the quirky bouncy YouTube style of video? Even then, his examples in the second half of the video are taste af.
I don't know, I'm a huge proponent of his channel because he's not afraid of talking about/teaching/using super technical gear nerd shit, but he always mixes it up with really fun and funny sound experimentation and playing. Then again I'm biased since I've been subscribed to him since the beginning.

I'm in the same boat. I'm not a huge fan of his music, but I actually find what he does to be really interesting with euro. So far there's been a couple things that I seriously wouldn't have thought of. You gotta approach it with the perspective of looking at someone else's work and seeing how their technique could be used in your own work.
As far as getting more people into eurorack, I'm all for it, as long as manufacturers can keep up so we don't have to go ages with certain modules always selling out and being on backorder. But that's really just a selfish though. In the end, if there's more consumer base, that means better products and hopefully better quality! I'm all for that.

Anywho... Benjolin arrived. Remember how I said I wasn't going to buy anything else for a while? Haha.
I'm having trouble getting the IFM stuff to get crazy. I finally printed out the manuals. I need to go through them and remain focused. I sort of built a modern chaotic serge.
I have 4hp left. That Tip Top TG One looks interesting. I have a Disting that I need to figure out how to make it power on properly so I can actually use it. I think that will prove to be more useful in helping me figure out my need for other dedicated utilities.
Off to patching.

just read a few pages of that thread. what a bunch of failed musician baby dick ego grumpy grandpa fucks.
Huang's stuff is usually not my style, but he's a really good musician and the Plonk video was super interesting.
i never understand that reaction. if you don't enjoy it, don't watch it. why be rude to some one?
asses.

Yeah, I don’t care what anyone says... the song he made at the end of the Plonk video is better than 80% of the videos I see byMuff posters. I think it’s awesome he is bringing this stuff to the masses.

I don’t really care for Andrew Hoang videos. Too much cheese and schlager. I was going to keep quiet about it but you guys have forced my hand!

Cheese and Lager sounds like a good plan about now.
It's not about disliking his videos, that's all well and good. But it's the whole tone they take with it that's so toxic it poisons the well.

Also lol people saying they are going to sell their plonk because "they cannot believe that intellijel sold out to some pathetic hipster YouTuber that probably doesn't understand synths". I'm paraphrasing, but that's pretty much what I got from that thread.

I totally agree about Huang. I've heard a couple of his songs that have totally made me wanna poke pencils in my ears, but I otherwise like his videos and general approach. He seems like a pretty damn likable person, too.
I've remember saying something negative about his music on here a little while back, and I subsequently felt bad about it because he seemed so nice

Dude I hate when they do that. I'm convinced that sometimes they just don't wanna deal with it and leave you a note without even coming to the door.

This hobby makes me want to get a box at a UPS store or something. Probably more inconvenient, but at least it would be consistent!
