If the left continues to play in the realm of illogic, identity politics and political correctness, they won't take back the white house. This isn't to say the right is the exemplars of logic and reason but the left is being taken over by social Marxists.

What they need is actual Marxism. Looking at society in terms of class interests instead of so called "identity". Human is the only political identity I tolerate.

I think people should consider their own and their fellow human's humanity when looking into issues and not adhering to identity politics or basing their decisions based on their group - race, class, gender, sexuality, etc. At the same time, it doesn't mean people should try to ignore those aspects of themselves, but I think it is foolish and wrong to advocate Marxism as the answer to societal problems.

I think what we are seeing is this being caught in a swinging pendulum between individualism and collectivism - going to the hard line of each. Neither side is right and to perceive it solely in terms of sides is a conceptual trap.

We are part of the collective of genius of human beings but we are also individuals.

The problem with Marxism is that it tries to do away with all the problems that individuality or groups can pose and tries to just level everything out - for the sake of (or claim of) ethical, economic, etc. betterment but in the process it ignores all the nuances involved in human beings and human society.

What should unite or level us is the realization that we all can use reason and logic - as part of our abilities as human beings - and our focus should be on the truth and merits of claims and arguments, even if they make us uncomfortable or push against our dogmas.

What the left is doing is trying to shut down any disagreement with it's conceptual and ideological viewpoints and agendas, and instead of taking on dissenting claims in the venue of reason and argument, they do it in the trenches of ad hominem attacks, slander, fallacies, etc. Again, I'm NOT saying this is only a problem with the left, but the left seems to be doing this more lately and it's undermining the valid claims within liberalism. And if this isn't dealt with, it will destroy/overtake the good points of liberalism.

It's only identity politics when it doesn't appeal to you.

I used to live in Ellison's district and see him as someone who can pull the party in a more economically progressive (and politically viable) direction. Plus, he has Bernie's endorsement.

I didn't advocate Marxist solutions - however misunderstood they are (Marxism is not necessarily illiberal like you seem to think, a Marxist agenda can be achieved through an electoral process, look at Scandinavia, France or Italy), but using Marxist analysis to look at society and understand how homogenous the political spectrum is. "Identity" is ingrained in the communautarianist outlook on society which is politically irrelevant. The problems people face are not a result of their "identity" or the "community" they belong to. Employment, sickness, polution, lack of entertainment and access to cultural goods or education are not "community" problems. Playing the identity card is a nice way to fake political dissensus in the interest of the class that is conscious of it's class interest and of it's hand on politics.

In my opinion, the solution is the active promotion of humanism in the face of everything. Rousseau's intuition, that there is a common good that we can only define by the democratic process through lack of a better solution to build a social contract, is entirely confirmed by climate change. All humans are dependent on the only ecosystem that is compatible with human life, therefore, human is what defines us on a political level. This is why humans inherently have rights, ingenuously called human rights etc...

But then I could go into a long winded explanation about how I'm a republicanist and socialist BECAUSE I like self reliance, and confuse the shit out of everybody.

Yeah, it's starting to look like President Trump (it's going to take some time for auto-correct to get used to that) won't really be that much of a departure from el quo del status.

I haven't mentioned it yet, but I do think "drain the swamp" was a great slogan.
