This is kind of an important point for me. If we want to change the system, a LOT of the typical male cultural responses are going to have to change. Male violence and their physical size/strength is part of the reason sexual violence is so prevalent. Women are afraid they are gonna get killed if they say no/fight back/expose their attacker/harasser. So by responding to the problem with more of the same is just upholding the system that we are fighting against.

And to the "free speech at all costs" guys, I don't understand how you can say that everyone should be able to say anything to further the debate. All that says to me is that whoever is loudest/meanest gets to keep intimidating those with less power. I am not saying that difficult things shouldn't be said. I am saying that maybe we think about who we are saying them to, and how they might be perceived, and we say them carefully. We learn to say them in a way that will do the least damage. I don't know why that is such a contested concept. Why wouldn't we want to be kinder to those around us? Why is unchecked free speech a bigger/better ideal than compassion and empathy?
Louise,

I'd love to pick your brain at the next meet up. I really enjoyed talking to you and you can offer me a perspective I don't often receive. I have thoughts on this subject but I'm not sure how to approach them without sounding like an ass, at least not on the internet.

If you're down, we can converse! :)

Yes, its extremely sad.

I was extremely surprised by him but I guess more because of the fact that I've seen him on the Senate floor a lot in the last year and just didn't expect it. I'm beginning to think I'm just naive.

The most telling thing is that the people that wanted to crucify every republican, actor, etc. that's been implicated in all these recent outings are now saying "well, she works for Fox Sports and she was in Playboy and worked at Hooters and the timing is questionable" or "the groping thing was just a joke, ignore the part where she's passed out" or "oh, but I like him, he shouldn't have to step down because of this, it was soooo long ago". :whateva:

There's nothing telling about this.
It's business as usual:

Loads of Republicans voted for Trump to ensure that a Republican president would get to put a person on the Supreme Court. Loads of people voted for Hillary for the same reason.
I am worried about the inevitable backlash of this, though.

You know, I'm actually hearing some legit things that make me question this incident. That sucks. I hope like hell she's not lying. That would fuck things up for all the victims out there that are coming forward. Man...fucking world we live in is so messed up sometimes.

She that's what I don't get. I'm just saying what has been told to me. The picture does look odd.

I absolutely hate that statement for a lot of reasons.

9 cops showed up to the hospital where a rape victim was being treated to intimidate her against pressing charges against 2 cops that raped her. That is why victims don't come forward. That statement is classic victim blaming, even if the person is a victim themselves. Questioning the timing is such BS. Of course they are coming forward now because it seems safe to do so. People are listening and believing victims at the moment. Makes total sense to me.

Worth thinking about on a similar note, from an article about Roy Moore:
Let’s start with the premise of the innocence argument: that voters should discount the allegations until they’re proven in court. That sounds fair, but it’s impossible. The alleged offenses took place decades ago, well outside Alabama’s statute of limitations. Moore can’t be charged or sued. His accusers will never get their day in court, unless he agrees to testify under oath, which could subject him to prosecution for perjury.
Naturally, he has declined this challenge.

So anyone who tells you to ignore the allegations until they’re validated in court is telling you, in effect, to ignore them forever.

@aens_wife there will always be scenarios where variables make things extremely difficult for justice. That does not mean abandoning mechanisms in place to pursue [it] is the best move. You'll get no argument from me how institutional abuse tends to be the worst of the worst (something something absolute power corrupts absolutely) and perpetrators who swore an oath and then violated it as an authority figure should be held to an exponential standard of conduct over a civilian. Any manner of punishment whether fine, jail sentence, settlement automatically doubled or tripled. Following due process.

A reminder the spirit behind "listen & believe" is to proceed to step 2 after identifying the premise a crime was likely committed and assuming it warrants the investigation; step 2 being due process, not tying a noose...or suspected witch to a stake. If the investigation commences under pretense of guilt or innocence, the confirmation bias of said investigators will undermine its accuracy and put justice at risk. The lessons of Aesop still apply.
