This is my favorite thing about the books. There is soooo many details/characters/history. I'm always constantly having to check the wiki for ASOIAF.

Bran Stark recalls stories told to the Stark children of the Night's King and the Nightfort by Old Nan, servant in Winterfell. She said some people believe the Night's King was a Bolton, a Magnar out of Skagos, an Umber, a Flint, a Norrey, or a Woodfoot, who ruled Bear Island before the ironmen came. However, she identifies the Night's King as a Stark of Winterfell and brother to the King of the North and hints his name too was Bran.
Much ado about nothing, IMO.

I'm still months away from rereading the books, though.

OK, so I was at least right that it was the Lord Commander who married an Other, declared himself king, etc. And it was way more than a few hundred years before the books, it was thousands of years. The wiki says it was in the Age of Heroes, which is before the Andals came (which was like 6000 years before the conquest).

Yeah, that's right. It was the Andals that cut down all the heart trees and drove the Children of the Forest North, wasn't it?

Yeah, as winter approaches and things start to move (the comet moves closer) much more of the supernatural stuff starts effecting the political happenings.
I still love that nobody in King's Landing believes the Whytes are coming.

This is all going off memory, but IIRC the First Men were the ones who cut down all of the heart tress in the south and drove the Children north. Eventually the Children and First Men made a truce and the First Men adopted the Children's gods and they were hunky dory together for a few thousand years (Age of Heroes), and then the Andals came and started fucking shit up again. The Andals are the ones that brought the religion of the 7 and they took over all of westeros except the north, where the First Men were able to hold them off at Moat Cailin. Then later the Roynars came over, and they became the Dornish.

I am a bit bummed that my little theory did not pan out. Did like the explanation of the whodunnit though. It'll be cool with me if the series outpaces the books.

After the mutiny, Sam is still there for a while talking to Mormont until he dies. He said that the mutineers were all raiding the food and raping the wives. Then Sam eventually leaves, and that's the last time we actually see Crasters. As for the mutineers, there's a Bran chapter in ADWD where Coldhands tells them to stop as he has some people he has to go "take care of". Bran wargs into Summer and sees dead bodies, all wearing Night's Watch clothes, and then starts to eat them. The consensus on westeros.org is that these were the mutineers that Coldhands killed and Summer ate. They're not named though.
NSFW: show
Thanks. I remember that part in the book, but never put together that it was likely the group at Craster's - I always thought it was just some random white walkers that were dead Night's Watch. Makes sense since I figure that Coldhands is Benjen Stark.
Rob Fossil wrote:The hardcore book readers (otherwise known as 'Nerrrrrrrrrddddsssss!!!') feel that showing possible scenes from future books confirms or busts their tinfoil theories and spoil certain character arcs. Also, in the episode synopsis on the HBO website, they named who the main Other was at the end of the episode (they have since changed the info on the website to "White Walker") which is a big spoiler. I'm happy we are getting new information and don't care if the series gets ahead of the books, I'll still read them when they're released.
I get that, but still think it was an overreaction since I really don't feel like it spoils that much. I find the implications of who that walker may or may not be very interesting.
Iommic Pope wrote: Yeah I know, its crazy right? You are right about the arduous journey North, though. Although,

I can't fucking wait until they get to the last Greenseer. That is going to be some Sabbathian-Olde-World-Warlocks-in-the-forest-hippies-of-doom shit. :doom:
Yeah Craster's isn't gone into in so much detail in the books.
Are you talking about Armory Lorch heading after Bran? I honestly was not a fan of that. Nor was I fan of Lorch being a composite of that character and Vago Hoat (I was really hanging out for the Brave Companions), but Noah Taylor is awesome, so I'll let it slide.
NSFW: show
Yeah man, the Greenseer bit is some doomy shit. Dude so slow that a tree grows through him :doom: I wonder how they will approach that in the show though. I feel like they are really changing around Bran's story - but maybe they are just adding material for him to keep him in the show in a more entertaining way than he was in the books during this period of time
I'm not big on the composite of Lorch and Hoat either. The Brave Companions shit would be pretty cool, but was probably an easy cut for the show since we don't really 'know' any of those characters.
Iommic Pope wrote:I think there are conflicting legends about him in the book.
Personally,

I prefer the one with the Boltons. It explains Roose's betrayal at the red wedding, gives it more background, and explains what the fuck is up with them a bit more. Also, Dreadfort. You don't get that name for nuthin.
Although, let's face it, anything is possible North of the Wall.
You've gotta read between the lines but it is there.
I find that there is very little truth when characters are explicit about historical events in this series. You've gotta look at the current state of play and piece the past together from rumour, whisperings and little deets dropped here and there.
So do we think
NSFW: show
The Crannogmen might actually bail out Bran and the Reeds at Craster's on the show? Was Jojen's seizure a psychic message to his dad?
???

Yeah, I feel like they are doing that with Bran, but it might be another interesting way for them to introduce more characters and story sooner, cut to the chase a bit quicker.
I guess the Brave Companions would require a fair bit of back grounding the show couldn't afford.

Soooo I take back what I said about the Craster's storyline. They resolved it quickly and in a way that made sense in the overall story. The rest of it was solid. I heart the Pod/Brienne and Sandor/Arya scenes.

Actually, Crasters was well done.
There is now way the show won't have completely eclipsed the books by the end of next season, either.

Was not aware that the Lannisters:

were actually not coming into any new gold. Is that in book 5?
I put that away in case anyone hasn't watched it yet.
