Fucking people..

As I have said before I like near lake.. and I live about a mile or so down the road from the park/"beach", there are parking lots on both side of the road so there is a lot of parking... the beach is not much bigger than my living room.... the parking lots are full.. no one was on the walking path or in the baseball/soccer fields so they all have to be down at the "beach" [it's more of a lawn] and in the lake.. the pictures I see in my head are like nature shows but instead of hundreds of fur seals all rubbing all over each other it's rednecks...

These are the only rednecks I want to see in a lake....

Not really relevant to anything but did you know "redneck" has its origins in the West Virginia Mine Wars?

Pretty wild slice of history considering how the term is used now.

good factoid! If we were restricted to posting things that were relevant I might have avoided the picture of the ghost bird (they always make me think of ghosts).

there were baby coots! It was adorable. I just stood and watched them for five minutes every morning for a week. Nice benefit of working from home is going and watching birds swim around the lake to "simulate a commute"

IIRC, that was because of the red neckerchiefs they wore to identify themselves to each other. But I also recall reading somewhere that Africaaners referred to English troops as rednecks after the English occupied South Africa.

I thought red neck came from the Scottish originally? Like 1600's or some shit.

There's an American political usage prior to the coal struggles, but it was anti-farmer, so not really an appealing thing either. Let's face it, epithets are always...problematic.

Not really.. It's nice to sound smart on the internet but playing semantics is silly. The current meaning of the term redneck has been the main use of the term for all out lives [maybe not Dubkitty but I'd say him to]. Moreover, a lot of the people that are non-pc pride themselves by using the label on them selves.. Maybe you are lucky to not live in an area that is not a battle ground for this where the use of gubernatorial race signs are used as Anti BLM AND anti wearing masks for corvid at the same time... and if so good for you.

Nah, I live in one of the more battle-groundy parts of a pretty, pretty battlegroundy state -division is in the air in higher concentrations than covid. Lots of confederate flags around here, and not just on trucks. I know where I stand, naturally, and I'm not naive enough to think that lots of my "neighbors" don't have plenty of epithets ready for me with my Prius and my mask and my hair (which ain't really anything in the places I originally come from). People used to refer to this area as just another part of Pennsyltucky, as opposed to the civilized 'burbs closer to Philly. Now all the farms but one or two have sold out to the developer sharks and the place is crammed with cardboard box McMansions and "Mews", but the OGs are still tooling around in their trucks blowing black smoke from their tuned bypass stacks. Seems like a lot of other places I've been from Manassas to Clarksburg to Cumming, GA. I don't know. I can feel the ground is soggy around here, and smell the btex, and I guess I'm not ready to start flinging any matches....

Also, any semantics I engage in aren't for the purpose of judging you, they're just my own prissiness....

:idk:  I know you weren't aiming at me, I just felt it was getting silly... :idk:
I was kind's hoping it was just here... I live in a very left city surrounded by that, butIt being the west coast they don't fly rebel flags but they do Trump flags [ironically in the more unpatriotic ways you can do..] in their place.. :picard: You know, this year is the first time I missed my mark in predicting things in 20 years.. I just would find what I thought was the lowest we could go and and I'd be pretty close.. but now.. every time I think the bottom is found.. They dig under it

My commute to grad school was one of my favorites: biking along a river for ten minutes in Oregon. Trees and moss were everywhere, and about once a week I’d have to stop because a flock of mallard ducks was crossing the path.
