It's not about Marvin Gaye or the Mars Volta or pop music or anything else. I simply think, on it's own, with no relative comparison, Pet Sounds is uninteresting. I've heard everything Beach Boys lovers have to say, taken it into consideration when I listened to the supposed best of their catalog, and in my opinion, it's all bull-shit. That's just my opinion, and the fact that you can't stand to know that I feel that way makes me feel soooooo damn good. Consider your goat got.

Eh. I'm insouciant on the matter.

One of my favourites.
Also:
concupiscence
prolix
vociferous
superfluous
Those are some that I used today. And I work at a grocery store.

Last night at work, I had a guy ask me if a certain style of condoms "are any good."
How do you respond to that!?! I haven't used those, but I have had sex. Oh, what a conundrum!

That is good, but not the direction I was going for. I just kind of shrugged my shoulders. It was a little awkward, but not as awkward as it could've been. That's about what I was going for.

it sounds like you, like many people, hate pop music for no real reason other than it's pop music. a lot of people feel the same way about rap or country. their loss.

love the beach boys
and pop music rules the world

i think its more the fact that you've had approximately zilch legitimate reasons as to why you dislike it.
"on it's own with no relative comparison" should make it quite clear that what we're pointing out to you is true.
and if you're going to ignore me bringing up Marvin Gaye, than you've pretty much proven to me, that you don't understand innovation unless its splooged out all over your face.

not even sure what your point is anymore other than, "there's no possible way anybody who has listened to Pet Sounds numerous times and been told repeatedly why it is supposedly good can't like the Beach Boys." I simply don't enjoy the Beach Boys at all. I understand that plenty of people do and have their own reasons for it, but none of those reasons have any value to me.

I've given them far more consideration than most groups, and for me, it hasn't come anywhere near the hype.
I like Marvin Gaye. Still not sure where you're going with that. Also, if we're talking about sixties vocal-based pop, The Mamas and the Papas rule! Seriously underrated production.

my point is you don't have a "why"
and my point with Marvin Gaye is that they both had a conventional start that later became revolutionary. both had wonderful senses of composition and arranging around their given genre, to the same extent, and in the same directions in most cases. they both had a focus on a lush orchestrated sound centered around a music genre based on simple catchy rhythms and did so in a very integrated and subtle way.
it'd be one thing if you just said "ain't my cuppa tea" but you go on about saying how bland everything is when its totally not the case yo.
mamas and the papas were sold on mama cass and controversy. not to mention that they basically owe everything to the beach boys. thats like saying "gwar is horrible, but those lordi guys are going places"

My "why" is I don't have a why. That's what I mean by bland. I don't find anything interesting about their music. It's a lack of why. I understand their humble beginnings growing into something, but I just don't think the something really is much of anything.
Also, I know that the second you talk shit about the Beach Boys, somebody will not let it go because they think you just haven't listened to them enough, effectively being the John Travolta jabbing an adrenaline shot into the Uma Thurman boob that is this thread.
