Well I made a fiscally irresponsible decision last weekend and traded an 80s Marshall cab for a Peavey XXX cab...

And I have no regrets. The cab is solid as fuck, and easily 20 lbs heavier. Pretty sure the Marshall was MDF or particle board, this cab is either plywood or legit wood. The XXX speakers were also a welcome surprise. Played it at home at pretty low volumes it just sounded "ok", at practice space/gig volumes it sounds fantastic. Projects well, and although they are supposed to be based on V30s, I don't find there's too much V30 sound like I thought I might. I might also be jumping on the Duncan Distortion train soon too.

Can't go wrong with a Duncan Distortion.

Had a 2x12 of that XXX cab, still regret selling that one. My Ampeg 2x12 is tighter, but the Peavey XXX 2x12 sounded huge, and had more input options.

Check out the Duncan Black Winter too. Distortion with more mids. I put one in an Epiphone SG for Ryan from Wartorn / Athropic / Blood Throne / The Parish, and I'm about half sure that's what's going in the bridge of my new grind guitar.

Ya, I really like my Ampeg 412 too. Although it doesn't appear to have rustled anyone's jimmies, I meant earlier that I don't find 8 V30s to be too many. (I really like the way these sound together)

I'm digging the demos of the Black Winters, but I'm a budget dude at heart, and $90 is a little over budget on pickups for me at the moment. I think I've got a line on a Distortion anyway. Let's see how I like it...

an 80's marshall would not have been mdf or particle board. by sometime in the 90's the 1960 cabs did have an mdf back panel, but the rest of the cab was still really nice birch ply. i'm pretty sure in the 80's the back panel was still birch ply as well. it's likely that the difference your feeling may be because the peavey may be made of full 3/4 ply whereas the marshall is 5/8 ply. the peavey is definitely plywood. nothing really wrong with 5/8 vs 3/4. lots of nice cabs are built with both. perhaps your just a 3/4 type of guy given the dimensions of the cabs and all. more likely, i would guess that those speakers are the big difference that may be floating your boat. which is great if you're happy.

either way, dollar for dollar you definitely got the shit end of the stick on that trade. like big time. but if you're happier with the sound, then i reckon that's what matters.
