sweet. yeah, i just meant get a few separate tracks for the drums and a separate track for bass and guitar. sounds like it's not gonna be an egregious (love that word. "and i so rarely get to use it in a sentance") amount of monies.
woof. i'm fucking EXCITED. i didn't realize how bored i was with what i was doing. it's gonna be a week or so of shuffling till we get into a spot, but my dick is HARD in anticipation.

The one time I played around with mic'ing my cab, I was using an SM57 and the bassist from the other practice space in our building said "Ugh, don't use those, they can't handle the lows well. Here, try this." And then he let me borrow his Beta 52. That thing had some fucking THUMP. Highly recommended. I think they usually go for about 100 on eBay

+1 on the Beta 52. For everything. Awesome stealth mic.

yes yes yes on the beta. Also for recording if you are doing it for reference and your not trying to release it or anything one mic is fine. It is all about placement. The Beatles recorded with two mics and there early stuff sounds fine.

I haven't tried the 52--generally I'm super leery of kick mic's and their flagrant mid-scoopery.
Also, I'm pretty sure any of The Beatles could've taken a dump and made it sound great.
Oh, wait...

anybody here have experience with mic'ing drums decently in a smaller space? looks like me and my drummer are going to share a room with his other band and i REALLY want to set it up where it's quick and easy to record ideas or song bits decently. is it a silly hope to be able to somewhat isolate guitar and bass and drums from each other in a smaller space? or is it just better to run a monitor mix to the drums and then do separate takes for the strings?
i'm an IDIOT about recording. i've just gone into my pc forevers.
Mic' on kick. Mic over snare. two overheads. One or two PZMs.
Any combination of that'll work fine*.
I use the onboard mic on my old Fostex 8 track to record all our practices. Doesn't sound sterling, but it's a fantastic way to pick up all the instruments and demo shit out.
*fine as in: will pick up sounds of drums being hit.
This is how Mecha Shiva does it sans PZMs. The overheads are directional mics arranged in a "cross beam" Y pattern.
I also prefer having my cab mic'd over DI.

You bassists just hate the Black Keys because Auerbach made you irrelevant
Flame suit on. I fucking love the Black Keys. Auerbach is Jesus

Nah, I don't dig the black keys because they're a shitty garage pop band masquerading themselves in the sonic trappings of a wicked bluesy power duo.
Their covers album is fucking ace. Their originals are soulless.

Nah, I was introduced to them after when the lights go out was in Black Snake Moan. That drum sound is boner-inducing.
So I started with Rubber Factory.
And I ended with Rubber Factory.
Again, Chulahoma is great. They just need to stop writing songs.

(goes to wikipedia and types in "The Black Keys")
"The Black Keys are an American blues rock music duo"
(stops reading)

Black Keys are alright, but nothing special. I like their Tighten Up video though.
