also, think i'm going to start insisting that i get mic'd instead of di'd. i'm going to pick up a Heil PR40 ('parently it's highly recommended for the bass'uns) for live and That Shit Was Awesome Man! Record That Down Before I Forget It! spots at practice.
anybody here have experience with mic'ing drums decently in a smaller space? looks like me and my drummer are going to share a room with his other band and i REALLY want to set it up where it's quick and easy to record ideas or song bits decently. is it a silly hope to be able to somewhat isolate guitar and bass and drums from each other in a smaller space? or is it just better to run a monitor mix to the drums and then do separate takes for the strings?
i'm an IDIOT about recording. i've just gone into my pc forevers.

If only that worked on the ladies (smother with cream cheese and shout at them), life'd be just fine
At least running a 1x15 makes it easy to decide on which speaker to mic. "erm..the good one?"

Mic' on kick. Mic over snare. two overheads. One or two PZMs.
Any combination of that'll work fine*.
I use the onboard mic on my old Fostex 8 track to record all our practices. Doesn't sound sterling, but it's a fantastic way to pick up all the instruments and demo shit out.
*fine as in: will pick up sounds of drums being hit.

Haven't decided yet. The majority of the time it's meh, so it'll probably get replaced with an AH-OOOGA horn or something.

Doser - yah. i was going to wipe an old laptop and keep it there for just running Sonar or Live i think. was for sure gonna try to figure out an easy room mic for recording jams and shit. for enough mics to do a somewhat decent mult-track recording, what do you think it'll run money wise?
yay having other people do the learning then smooth-assing through by asking questions! like an Information Cuckold!
lulz. FUCK YOU I LIKE ME CLEAN BLEND WHY YOU GOTTA BE SUCH A HATER FUCKING LUDDITE.
or something. seriously though, i'm SUPER excited to find the right guitar dooder/dooderetter to work with. curious if i'll still want to stick the blend knobby in weenis hole I LOVE THEM SO MUCH when playing with someone else.
it's all new and exciting for me!!

the blends on my xero and 4545 are minimal. I usually use them for fading in noiseparties and in feedback loops.
feedback loopers: wake up your pedals' malicious potentials

Depends on how awesome yr friends are/how many multiple tracks you're thinking of when you say multitrack.
For example, I snagged an SM57 for a grand total of zero monies exchanged. So there's the basic electric instrument cab right there, and it can run you anywhere from free to like $50 used. Don't worry about new unless its thoroughly trashed--these things are bombproof.
If you're looking for a drum sound that's more highly evolved than, say, The Black Keys (and fuck me--I hate everything about that band except the way their drums and guitars sound) feel free to dick around with kick mic's and the like. Be aware those things can get seriously expensive and so much of recording a good sound is placement anyway...
For a decent(read: Cheap) multi-track recording, I'd suggest something SM57-y for the guitars and at least two mics for the drum (one in/around the kick, at least one over the kit on either the snare side or the other side--depending on where your drummer loiters). You can even steal the 57/whatever from your instrument cab to pull double duty on the drums if you're not tracking your songs live.
Oh, and as far as stands... You can pay for 'em, or you can duct tape lamps. Your call.
