Re: Awesome books...
In celebration of this thread, and my English Lit degree, I'm going to mention some non-capital-l-Lit books.
, but with a middle finger.
Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (his Dirk Gently books are also great)
Neil Gaiman - Anansi Boys, American Gods (his best, imo...though the Graveyard Book was great too)
Tad Williams - Otherland (way overlong cyberpunkish series, but still a great read if you invest yourself)

I may sound like a crazy person, but Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter is an amazing book. There's an entire section that is a palendrome and it's AWESOME.

I read it a year or two ago and I fucking hated it, I didn't feel that it ever went anywhere. I should probably try reading it again.
heres a link to the wiki on the film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rum_Diary_%28film%29
there is no character of Addison Yeamon in the film though.

I'm a big fan of Nabokov, Rushdie, Vonnegut, Lovecraft, and Kerouac.
Pale Fire, Fury, Cat's Cradle, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and Dharma Bums would have to be my respective favourites from those guys.
I'm currently reading that House of Leaves book, and I quite enjoy it so far. Weird, good. Also, finally getting into Alan Moore over the past year or two. Pretty big genius that guy.
<-- Jim Henson was a pretty awesome dude really, but I don't think he wrote any books.

Re: Awesome books...
House of Leaves was an interesting read. I like how they weaved in a few of my favorite myths (the labyrinth/minotaru, yggdrasil etc.) and the use of different fonts to denote the speaker.
I looked like a mad man during the sections where you have to turn the book around
There is an entire forum dedicated to that book, it's worth a look if you've already read it (don't do it before).
Somebody mentioned Chabon...I picked that book up on a whim (like many others) but never got around to it, I'll have to dig up my copy.

Michael Chabon is an awesome writer. I think it was his cousin that used to teach at my highschool. I've read Summerland, Kavalier and Clay, and The Yiddish Policemen's Union which were all great reads.

i've read four HST books. but not that one. does it sucks becuz it is a novel. i think HST is too great of a writer to be so causally dimissive about.

Re: Awesome books...
I have so little free time I have a hard time justifying reading fiction, but Ulysses is the top of that list along with Dubliners.
Hemingway always makes me want to punch him in the mouth for being such a boor though.
This was the last one I read for fun (and it was awesome, before you ask)

Right now, I'm reading this

It's interesting, but hardly riveting stuff...

yeah i actually used to read that column every once-in-awhile. around the turn-of-the-century. it was good though. HST literally began & ended his career as sportswriter. & some of his best pieces were about sports. so i could see how Hey Rube would be a great book..
