I found out everyone else in my position was getting paid almost double what I was. So I can't say as money is much of a motivator but inequality is a big demotivator. No pizza parties, either. I never understood what more they wanted from me, or what those more highly-paid people at my position offered that I didn't.

Dude that sucks, having people at different pay scales doing identical work is a terrible idea, we generally give raises based on department, otherwise there are tons of problems.

Regarding the motivation at work thing, I do think money plays a part in helping people focus when things get shitty. Plus, people who aren't worried about how they are going to pay their bills can do better work. Pay at my shop is on the low end of the industry and it's hard to keep people, and good ones usually leave.

Been working here for a long time waiting for a big payoff for time invested and it just never happens, eventually you have a few unproductive hours while you sit at your desk and think "Why do I do this?"

we can't do pizza either because we have to many GF people (most legit btw)

I think we were kind of hinting at it last page, but having an effective metric for measuring the success of your people and then even recognizing them for a job well done goes so far. That being said if they are getting paid half as much as everyone else it goes really far in the opposite direction.. pay the grinders what they are worth.

Agreed, my boss only uses evaluations to air grievances (it's like festivus)
And generally not everybody gets evaluated, just people that need a talking to.

A good metric for evaluating everyone would go along way around here.

My job has a probation period of "a year and a half, well, maybe a few months more or less, I don't really know, it depends" so everyone is a temp worker until then, meaning you make like 6 bucks less than the permanent people.

Pretty sure it's well established that I can build hoses and push buttons by now. It's lame that I have to wait an undefined time to get hired.

They have a spread sheet showing the average time in position, and set the probationary pay period accordingly to save themselves a shitload of money.

(getting paid half as much guy here) I don't even know if anyone was getting evaluated every year. Is that the word? I didn't. They'd tell me I got a 3% raise and a 4% bonus with no career development, etc. This was in the 90s.

I'm working 12 hour days at a factory. We just switched over from 8 hour shifts a month ago. It's, of course, excruciatingly repetitive by nature, but the thing I was doing today was straight assembly line style shit. 12 hours of the same 30-second series of motions. My god.

By hour 8 I was losing my grip on sanity. I couldn't keep from doing a thousand-yard-stare. I broke out in a cold sweat and felt like jumping out of my skin. No longer did I have any songs to recite, books or movies to remember. No more thoughts to pass the time with. Only nausea and tendonitis.

Then, on our next break, the shift lead presented us with surprise food. And I felt like a human being again. For like an hour anyway.

...oh man I gotta get out of there.
yes you do
fuck that shit
