1590XX is not the same as 1790NS.
While $5 is a stretch for a "pre-drilled" enclosure, I also think "pre-drilled" enclosure prices tend to be quite silly, myself. Especially since I've seen examples of the drilling being sub-standard because they were actually hand drilled rather than, say, CNC'd (I think it was an example from Mammoth where it was like that).

That being said, if you're spending even $25 a pop (generously assuming these enclosures are marked up only 200%) on pre-drilled 1590XX enclosures, you should find a new distributor.

I want one but the holidays are coming up and can't be thinking about myself right now.

As for the money if you watch the video the money also benefits the school he teaches at and helps kids have a paid internship. Which is fucking rare as shit.

I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger for the "Barebone DIY Kit". Seems worth it since it comes with a drilled and painted Hammond 1590XX case, plus pots, jacks, and switches (aka all of the expensive components). The idea of a looper with filters for each loop is pretty cool to me, and the ability to mix the loops (and dry signal) pushes it into extremely cool territory. The filters make this a lot more useful to me than most matrix mixers, and I bet I could get some really interesting textures with only a few effects.

I wouldn't pay $350 for the thing, but $160 for the kit seems worth it. But that might just be because I hate dealing with painting enclosures.

$5 is obviously meant to be a hyperbolic mockery of the suggested price of $50. Buying one here in Canada, where it's a bit more expensive, is $12USD, if, like this company you're buying a thousand, the price drops to $9. I don't know anyone competent enough to solder something at a moderately complicated level who isn't able to drill holes, and certainly none who are going to pay $40 for it.
Again though, I'll ask what warrants the price?

It's not mentioned whether the enclosures are finished, so I assumed they were bare. Which, based on your prices would mean it's worth $14. So that's a profit of $36 on an aluminum box.
But, like I said, I don't know the extent of the work on the enclosures.

Peter has put over a year into this pedal. So when you guys say “cash grab”, I’m sorry but you don’t know what fuck you’re talking about. Don’t buy the shit if it doesn’t appeal to you. You don’t have to be jerks about it either.
That's fair, but I think it's perfectly fair to say "hey, I think that price sucks," too. :idk:

So the answer to "what warrants the cost of a preposterously marked up enclosure/product" is "you don't know what the fuck you're talking about"?
Nice, now I understand, thanks.

Really, that was his response to saying "cash grab."
Calling something a builder does a "cash grab" is kinda like calling someone a racist: there's probably gonna be a strong argument to the contrary.

I obviously deleted my post because I don’t want to argue with people who don’t really care in the first place. I’m not going to have this discussion. If you don’t like the pedal, don’t buy it. That simple.

The justification is the research and development he put into the pedal. As far as I can tell Peter runs a business and needs to make money. That’s the other reason.

No ones denying that, but from a consumer perspective this feels expensive. I'll paraphrase another ILF user because he hit the nail on the head:
The only great thing about this over a mixer is the bypass stomp and fx loops that cheap mixers tend to lack. For that price you're out of cheap mixer territory
Now, is the idea of a matrix mixer for people who don't get matrix mixers cool? Sure. Is it Rad that the dude is doing this for the right reasons? Definitely. Is it OK to be underwhelmed by the product, rather than then stuff surrounded it? Totally.

Y e p ^ ^ ^

The cash grab comment refers mostly to the kickstarter and the rewards available, not the product itself (as much).

It's a fine idea, cool that he's put time into it and seems like a good dude, still doesn't change my opinion that it's overpriced and that the kickstarter rewards are bogus. To dismiss anyone who has an opinion contrary to yours as someone who doesn't care/doesn't know what they're talking about doesn't make much sense: they care about it enough to talk about it and voice an opinion, caring doesn't mean "supporting emphatically". Last I checked this was a forum, not a gear blog; there's meant to be discussion both ways.

FWIW, in theory, I should be the target market for this, because I love matrix mixers and effects loops and things of that nature. And it's not like I won't spend $350 on an effect if it feels worth it, simply that this doesn't to me right now.

It feels like $250 worth of a really cool pedal and $100 worth of Kickstarter charity for a good cause. I want the pedal but am not flush enough to donate $100 to this school. The product/charity ratio feels off to me
