She sounds exactly like the books minus all of the plunderphonics, loving this. :joy:

I love her. They used to play this song on the radio here all the time, got me hooked. Thanks for the reminder—it'd been a while since I listened!

Necro bump bc damn this is rocking my world:

Can't speak to the rest of their discography (yet) but this record has to be the best, most refreshing piece of music I've heard this year. As I continue to listen more and more I'm drawn further in as well.
You can't really tell what's a sample and what's deliberately performed and layered in for the track itself, and that's a beautiful thing to me. Lots of Eastern sounds firmly re-contextualized into western music. It's familiar and easy to enjoy, but not shallow either.

Baremountain, I love you right now.

Also, I kept looking once this thread died out, found a good scene in Japan of music like this, I'll make a giant spam post sometime soon. :thumb:

Yeah, encoding youtube vids is a pain since our forum software is ancient.

Go back and listen to Smells Like Content and realise nobody else sounds like The Books. What a great band :(

Did you hear Nick talking about how that song came about? At least one of the videos on YouTube he talks about it -- I think he said his brother used to go into the woods and just record stream of consciousness thoughts, and he gave him a bunch of those tapes.

That was on the excellent Song Exploder podcast. :)

I also recently discovered Wouter van Veldhoven, which I would class in this vein:

The above piece reminds me of some of Sonic Youth's more ambient works, but with the fabricated instruments and usage of tape machines, I'd class as a similar aesthetic to the collage stuff.

Edit: Bandcamp is here. https://woutervanveldhoven.bandcamp.com ... k-in-tapes

Yeah, after I found his Bandcamp I listened the rest of the evening and took a break from that new Less Art album. Great textures.

I just wish he'd put some of this stuff out on vinyl.
