Yeah I have some friends in Ypsilanti, although I've never been (all I've seen of Michigan is driving through it and the Detroit airport. The drive is nice. The airport not so much).

There was a mid 90s Mad magazine spread where the punchline is
"...You're a winner and still a loser!"
I recall one of the comics had the setup, "Taking 1st place in a Rush Limbaugh look-alike contest..."
My TO let alone PTO gig is pretty fuct rn, but it suddenly doesn't sound so bad.

I know NJ is a punchline in its own right but Flint would make Captain Planet faint irl np dwai

Hm? What?

I grew up in Ypsi (teenaged years, anyway). It's come a long way, but still has some terrible parts. Maine, on the other hand, is a treasure trove of things I don't care about (which isn't to say it isn't a decent place).

I get 2 weeks at the end of december, 1 or 2 weeks during menonite holidays in spring, & US holidays off. can pretty much request whatever time off if something comes up. like I got a paid week off last year to record an album and play out of town, that was cool.

5 weeks of paid vacation is the legal minimum for a full time job 35hrs a week. Then you add in 8 days off of national holidays. White collar jobs are often 39hrs a week which gets you an additional approximate 30 days off, that you can use as days off or save up for later towards retiring sooner etc... You get even more if you work at night, on Sunday's or during holidays.
Then, on branch level or company level, more can be agreed upon or negociated. Like I have a buddy who gives his employees a sixth week of paid vacation because why not.
All of this is only valid if you're someone's employee. Being self employed means you can take the all year off or zero days off. Your choice, however dictated by your wallet.
I think we should have more and reduce the work week of at least half a day again because we have more and more machines to do shit and in a somewhat related manner more and more unemployed people who previously occupied low paid jobs that can be performed by a machine. Also, the last time we did that (in 2002, the work week went from 39hrs a week to 35hrs, same salary - bear in mind companies were helped by the government and free to,adjust by paying their current employees overtime or by employing more people), 350 000 unemployed frenchies got jobs. But it's not very trendy because apparently we should compete with Romania and maybe soon Ukraine in terms of labor laws or every company here will leave yada yada yada genuine free market yada yada yada social protection is for wusses.
I should add there are no sick days in France. If doctors say you cannot work, you're paid your full salary (minus the first two days I think), half by social security and the other half by your employer. "Personal days" are also a significantly foreign concept to my French brain, but I assume these are likened to days off for moving, mourning loves ones etc... Which we also have for plenty of occasions. Number of days varies on many criterias though.

I get a week per year and I've never taken it, because I don't know how to vacation as a solo person.

You just go somewhere?
Conversely, I don't know how to vacation with other people.

I don't think I ever got paid vacation. I had a ton backlogged, but my time off never got approved. I would usually quit, get paid out, and then travel (Pismo!).
Since we've been married (8 years), I think my wife has only really gotten two weeks off for real vacation...the other times were scheduling. Neither of us took a sick day either. Since we've been together only 3 trips (12.5 years)
Only real trip we've taken that isn't a weekend and on vacation paid time was last summer. We only went to England because we both quit. She is trying to take off time in February, but her work is already saying no.
I'm on permanent vacation!
I think officially we both got 2 weeks a year at every job (more if overtime), rarely holidays off (we always worked Christmas and stuff), and sick time was always unpaid or drawn from vacation.

I get twenty days. I blew through that pretty damn fast this year by winning the genetic roulette and having open heart surgery. I am on disability now till the end of the month...yay 60% of my salary when I have medical bills to pay. I plan on just staring down anyone that gives me any shit when I take some days off this fall and over the holidays. I've worked my ass off for this company over a decade and typically leave a few days on the books each year that I can't take. Should be interesting.

I think I get 33 days off a year, and I have the right in law to 3 weeks consecutive time off.
I could be wrong but afaik Swedish productivity isn't lower than anywhere else. GDP/capita hovers around similarly holiday-immune countries as Australia.
Yeah in my sector if you're permanent part time/full time hours you should accrue roughly 4 weeks in a year.
If you work a trade though, you gotta plan really carefully because there's no paid/accounted for time off there.
I really need a holiday.
I've taken time off but it's been due to injury/surgery recovery or to do uni stuff.
Plus I smash through my sick leave and cut into my annual with little kids getting sick all the time.
Hell I had today because gastro has hit our household.
Yay.

Dude. My sister lives close to my mom. Almost always guaranteed coverage for a sick kid. My wife and I live across the country which just means a world of pain when my son gets sick. He's 7 now and clearly a stronger immune system, but there was a time when my wife and I were literally juggling him and our jobs. Brutal. Having kids/being an adult is harder than anyone ever makes it out to be.

My mum is near us which is helpful but she does work which makes it a bit trickier.
But I can't exactly send a 5 year old filled with gastro around there.
It's tough man.
Hats off to you, sir.

You don't want to hear about my sick leave/leave to take care of small dudes.
Fuck man, I hate it when child no 1 brings home gastro and you get to play gastro dominos.
