Damn. I mean full disclosure I think expensive footwear is kind of like Monster Cable but that's pretty cool.
I am so with you. (Most of my shoes have been gotten from ebay/thrift stores/dumpsters. I understand the appeal of a good quality pair of shoes, but it's hard to go for things that cost more than my rent and aren't synthesizers. Maybe, since my last two pairs of barefoot trail runners died in the woods last week, when i sell some pedals, i'll treat myself.) But that article was really interesting, and i remember loving all of the amazing shit like this in New York. Not enough to move back there, but still.

See the "Hippie Shit" thread, but at this point in my life, i basically keep a pair of dead doc martens in my car for when i have to go inside a building, and otherwise am barefoot. I like the feelings of grass and mud and whatever on my feet, and it makes driving stickshift a lot easier for me. I have had these docs for 7 years now, they were old when i got them, and i finally literally just walked through the insole, it's completely caved in under my big toes.

I work at a standing desk (yeah, THAT GUY), and have had great results with Adidas Glide Boost running shoes, which tend to run anywhere from $90 to $130. They typically last me 4 - 6 months per pair. YMMV.
