I realize that due to the nature of this question there are bound to be slight spoilers, but I was just thinking the other day about the plot device where you're following a character that you assume to be the "hero" while there is another character you assume to be the "villain" throughout the film, but when you get to the end (or whenever) you realize it's the opposite. Like the guy you've been rooting for is actually the bastard who fucked everything up or is trying to fuck everything up, and the guy you thought was the evil dicklicker is actually the victim or hero.

Any movies/books/shows that are kinda like this?

Can you tell me the titles without giving anything else away?

That would be COOL.

Thanks!
I believe Memento was already mentioned, so I'll add Following. :)

Oh, I just thought of another one that matches this pattern perfectly: Mulholland Drive

Not even the scene with hot lesbian action could make me sit through that trash again

Ok so you definitely posted Following before I did but that shit is 110% invalidated by any besmirchment of Mullholland Drive.

I was on the fence about mentioning American Psycho.
Because I hate the ending. It made me want a refund.
But I remember it. And it wasn't that bad when thinking about how much I loathed the terrible ending of Mulholland Drive...to where I cant remember it. My brain has literally blocked it out.
You know what I do remember? The DVD was presented as 1track, no chapters. And if the disc erred, pixelated to the point it needed a cleaning...you had to fastforward back to the spot where you were. No chapter jumping. G A R B A G E.

I mean in my defense I've only seen Mullholland Drive once and I was very stoned and very film student at the time but I'm pretty sure it's nothing short of a masterpiece.

How did you even manage to follow the story?

Visually, atmospherically it is a masterpiece. I generally dig noir aesthetic.
But I'm going to trust my memory, flawed & selective as it may be...the remaining sentiment of a movie not being saved by hot les action burns too bright to have faded...yet

I would think the short-term memory loss of being very stoned would negate any film student stat boosts to wisdom, intellect. Wouldn't the hits to attention, hunger & vitality all be too draining when coupled with a convoluted, monotonous story like MD?
Ever tried dungeon crawling through a roleplaying game blind, while very stoned? Esp with random encounters...how often did you inadvertently double-back?

W/e. I like plenty of terrible movies. But if yall Mulholland Drive fans tell me you prefer Waking Life to Slacker.... :whoa:

I mean that's just silly. But I think Lynch's plots are generally more impressionistic than anything, so they're not really something that has to be followed, per say (and you'll note film student is in italics because it's the opposite of a boast toward wisdom :p).

Fun interview with him on the movie, even if you don't like it:
