I've had success with both a Blackstar DistX, Gain set somewhere before the first marker, and an Ibanez Tube King (the red one), also with the gain kinda low into a JC120. Big sounding.

The key with solid state stuff is to get the dirt from the pedal but watch the output volume so you aren't slamming the front end. If you have an issue with things sounding harsh you're probably just dealing with bad solid state clipping and need to turn down on the pedal's volume or the pre amp. I also will say that I've had great luck running a rusty box in front of any of the 7 solid state heads owned my me or old bandmates and basically using the head as a power amp. Also have to recommend a BAT Pharaoh because it's versatility is insane.
