Oh of course—it's pretty horrifying to think that I've become desensitized enough to the nearly all-around barbaric nature of the porn industry that only REALLY overtly scummy guys stand out.

I would like to float the hypothesis that porn thrives upon desensitization. If one kick loses its thrill, you have to buy another and another and another. The perfect consumer is never satisfied because his taste buds are dulled and he keeps consuming more to try to feel something.

i wouldna have seen 82% of the pron i've watched if normal shtuff didna lose it's appeal so quick. part of why i wanted to take a break. super jaded, Real Life Sex Time was..... not as engaging.

i WILL say..... as long as both people are into it..... rough angry shtuff can be HAWT. never ever ever ever would want to watch nonconsensual thingies. but respecting each other's limits and going at it hard? yeahhhhhh. that can be. that can be nice.

Well established! The main character in Sam Lipsyte's Home Land comes to mind... I can't remember exactly what the story was, but I recall something about only being into fetish porn that involved jizzing on girls' stockings, or something of the like (seriously one of the funniest books I've ever read, fwiw). The massive array of options we have now breeds hyper-specialization, in porn and pretty much tons of other areas one can think of.

The converse being that you don't have to settle for things you don't find stimulating nearly as much as you would have 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 years ago.

That's true of any interest, prurient or otherwise.

Human sexual response can be generated, conditioned, modeled, and altered. I think it's just as likely that for the majority (i.e. leaving out the people who knew their proclivities and were not finding representation until the internet), the variety of stimuli that are consumed today are a result of the nature of capitalist markets, not an accurate representation of the diversity of tastes.

tl;dr: back in the day people were fine with nudie magazines and grainy bush flicks. Hell, National Geographic and Frederick's Of Hollywood catalogs were enough.

Also also worth noting that that MMA dude who beat the shit out of his pornstar girlfriend attempted to defend himself legally by saying (paraphrased) that it wasn't rape/assault because she did 'that sort of thing' professionally. So that's totally absurd but the important thing is that some defense lawyer (or team of lawyers) sat down and said "shit, this is the best we've got" and actually rolled with that because they figured their best shot was a variation on 'she was asking for it'. Which is an attitude that kind of plays into this, I think.

Sure, but that's a conclusion reliant on a relative nonstatement -- or, if you prefer, a constant commonality in the human experience -- isn't it?

I don't know, but I would wager a not-insignificant amount of money that the diversity of tastes precedes the striation of commercially available porn (or records, or porn records). Can't put it in your greed bag if someone hasn't determined there's a market for it, after all.

I'd put a Susan B. Anthony or two down on the probability that those markets are determined by the producer as much if not more than the consumer. Not everything is crowd-sourced. People are not that creative for the most part, and those that are tend to create their own material. The rest is fed to the masses until they desensitize, and then the scuzz knob gets turned up by the porno puppetmasters.

I don't think what you're saying is wrong, just that I think it paints a relatively incomplete picture of human sexual history. On the other hand, while I know some people who study this stuff (in an academic sense) for a living, I'm not one of those people, so :idk:

Yeah I'm not running off a stack of data or anything, just basing it on what I've read, observed and digested over the years. It's probably a positive feedback system with influence coming from both sides. The only thing for certain though is that porn doesn't just make itself. And yes it is an incomplete picture of human sexual history, but so is pornography itself, thank jimmy.

if you look at somewhere like 1920s Berlin there's all the proof you need that human sexuality has always been into out there shit, and there's always been niche pornography to try and sell to it. What's changed is the manner of distribution. More demand, more supply, more supply and then more demand, etc.

Who pays attention to the guy in porn? It should all be POV IMO.

How do people make money in porn? What idiot is paying for porn?

So are you saying you prefer a terrible, saggy, sad looking penis over a large, fully erect master specimen? Besides that, being a male porn star has a lot more to do with physical ability than face looks.
