Lucky you, man! I wish my grrrl would play. She meets the nerd criteria. She's a fucking library director. I do get to play with my sons, though. They're pretty formidable adversaries in their own right.

Do they make some sort of cards sets that are enough to properly play the game without having to buy more stuff now ?
I might be interested in playing a bit again with one or two friends if we can treat it as a finite boardgame (I do like the game mechanics) but I have no interest in spending more time/money on this than on a regular game...

You and your friends could each buy 6 booster packs, assuming you already have access to basic lands. This creates fair and balanced play, as you would each construct decks using the strongest colors pulled from the packs (the key here is to make 40 card decks, roughly 22-23 spells and 17-18 lands). Duel Decks are another way to go. For the most part, they are well balanced and you often get some pretty cool stuff in them. One example of a well balanced Due Decks combo is the Sorin vs. Tibalt decks. Now Tibalt is in the minds of many, the worst of all planeswalkers. But his deck in the Duel Decks package is built around him and in my experience with it, was consistently able to barely win vs. the Sorin one. Plus, you get two foil planeswalkers out of the deal. And there are some solid cards in each deck.
Also, the commander 2014 decks are all quite good, if you wanted to go that route. They're pretty well balanced when facing one another. And make for some fun multiplayer games as well. My favorite out of those is the red one. And with those, you get planeswalkers that can act as your generals. Hope this helps.

That's how my two brothers and some of our friends have played for years. We have a big box of maybe 20-25 various preconstructed decks from throughout the years and we just grab one at random and play, trading off after each match, until we're bored of it. We've got a bunch of unaltered preconstructs ranging from stronghold up through the ravinca block, a couple of the new(ish) duel decks, and some of the reprinted championship decks with the different backs from way back. You lose out on the fun of deck building but most of the people I still play with have very varied skill levels anyway so it helps keeps things pretty even.
My brother has probably 30,000+ cards dating all the way back to revised but they haven't been touched in probably 10 years.

Also, yeah, pre-cons can make for some close games. Last time I got into Magic (I've been on and off many times over the years), I only collected pre-cons. And any singles I'd buy would be for improving upon the pre-con's theme. I remember that Stronghold Migraine deck being pretty good. And it has Ensnaring Bridge
