I think playing slow on any instrument will expose any weakness in technique and definately requires more skill than people think. There's a hilarious drogonforce "can you play this" video out there where the guy plays some stupid run on guitar full speed and then fails horribly when he trys to slow it down to show what he's playing. Speed can cover a lot of slop.

Yeah, Dave Lombardo had a harder time recording South of heaven due to it being slower overall. Just listened to this last night and this morning on the way to work. I really like the dry crack if his snare and how punchy all his drums are.

Then there is how WE hear it. That will vary depending on who's ears are doing the listening. Fie instance, I am sure many here love High on Fire. I am also sure that many love the drumming. lol. I know. Its just the way I hear it. My favorite style leans more towards a Bill Ward swing feel.
I love hearing that in what people are bashing out.

Speaking of Lombardo, I was almost gonna mention him in relationship to the drummer I'm working with now. He's come a long way with the single kick approach, compared the straight foward double bass blast beat style he played in his former metal bands. Playing slow definitely requires patience and precision. All in all, I'm happy with his drumming. Good timing, feel and never a lack for energy. Taming the energy a little while playing in the pocket is the only real noticeable thing to me, in order to let a song flow in the way it wants to. The energy will present itself at some point in various ways just through natural progression of the song itself.
Back on Lombardo, I was a huge fan of his growing up. Loved his Fantomos work, but in my opinion, Paul Bostaph nailed it, in regard to Slayer.

I love when a drummer kinda breaks the beat to follow the riff and then goes straight back into the beat. The guy from Elder does that a lot.
Gotta say though, I love my drummer, been drumming with him for over 2 years, in 3 bands now. He has great feel, knows when to do things, when not to do things. Not to mention the best sounding kit ive ever heard. Were learning our craft together and are learning eachothers nuances. He brings the best out of my playing. Weve become a solid rhythm section, and have a lot more room to grow. Put it this way, I'm gonna do whatever it takes to stay with him.
