I get the impression Bill F is a pretty anal guy about parts. I'd say the parts drift associated with Klons is the same as any small scale production pedal - I can't find a degooped gutshot but I'd guess they're +/- 5%. Pots are likely Alpha, +/- 20% if he's getting the standard ones. That's a fair bit of variance right there, even if you're using the same diodes, ICs and what not. Especially looking at the input and output caps, that explains why some will have slightly higher bass or treble content, and why they will clip slightly differently (less bass content into the clipping stage will sound tighter for example). Even a manufacturer like Boss, who has the ability to buy in parts to higher tolerances, displays some variance from unit to unit, especially with the older models.

I'd say most of it is down to the fact that if you're paying a lotta cash for a pedal you're also prepared to invest the time to make sure it is exactly as you want it, and you're prepared to listen for differences in a way that you wouldn't do in other situations. Also, being a boost/light OD the sound range is a lot smaller, leading differences to be more pronounced. As an example, I've got two Elements, one of which is significantly hotter than the other (from the first run) and it doesn't really affect how I use them as I can find the same sounds anyway - the spectrum covered by them is so enormous that any variance isn't really relevant (and I'm not spending time at the extreme ends of the spectrum where I'd be more likely to notice). But that variance is going to be more noticeable in a pedal like the Klon (or any other relatively mild OD).

That's my quasi scientific take on it, which basically is a way of saying "what he said" to Chanks' last post.

I see no reason why a Klone won't get you in the same ballpark as a "middle of the road" Klon (even accounting for the secret sauce diodes - you can measure their clipping threshold and get something functionally equivalent without having to know the exact type). Not saying a Soul Food will sound the same as those units which do have the grail sound.

Chankgeez wrote:No, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a certain level of similarity in sound from unit to unit, but the reality of it is a little different.

For one thing, I think Steve's building in much smaller numbers.

Both Pigdogs and Centaurs are labor intensive builds, but there's a little more hand work involved with building Pigdogs. Also, the nature of the circuits are quite different. The parts count in a Centaur is much higher and it's a more complex circuit than anything Steve builds. Construction methods vary as well. Steve has way more control over fine tuning the sound of individual pedals. There exists different degrees of "high level boutique". So, I'm not sure it's really a fair comparison.
Yeah I heard different Centaurs have different amounts of pixie dust mixed into the goop.

It might've been Wilco dust, though.
