I'm planning on moving to Houston later this year. Texas is the place to be.

So Harlingen TX keeps popping up in cheapest places to live, a quick craiglist search shows low rent, decent amount of jobs for me but less so for the gf.

Besides that and the fact its like almost on the mexican border i know nothing else about it, anyone from there here?

what is the crime rate? I'd hate to end up in an area that is close to all the messed up shit going on due to our drug war and mexico's inability to fight the cartels.

Some friends of the family live in that area, and it's beautiful.
They live out in the country a bit more, so I can't really say what the city is like.
But in general, the Rio Grande valley is gorgeous.
It's the city with the lowest cost of living in the entire US, apparently.

I kinda doubt there's much of a scene there, but I guess it depends on what your kinda scene is, and how important that is to you to begin with.

Maybe take a short vacation there and see what you think?

Cincinnati, OH! Midwest can get super hot and super cold. But the music scene is real cool/supportive. Most bar venues have no cover AND pay well! Felt very much a part of the community here quicker than anywhere else I've moved to. Super cheap rent. My last place was a $187/mo (2br for $375) and was awesome. Live in a nice fancy house now and even that is $250/mo. There are some sweet local record stores and vintage music gear shops and there's even a pinball place that isn't even a bar or anything, it is JUST pinball. There are constantly new cool places opening up everywhere.

Yeah that place was admittedly rather cheap. I don't really get how it happened / sort of regret moving out but then sort of don't because my new living situation is so good.

Just moved into a really nice 4 bedroom house that has 2 full bathrooms, 2 car garage, deck party backyard with hot tub, awesome neighborhood + neighbors, basement, super cool musician roommates and the whole place is just $995 + utilities.

CINCINNATI!!!

I honestly dont mind driving a little ways for an actual music scene, the closest here is about an hour and a half away in Spokane......which has turned fairly laughable recently but ive driven there for gogs many times.
