This question is phanta's but I'll hijack it anyway. At least in Swedish it's actually pretty helpful. If you're talking about one single object, or one single entity, and it's a noun, then you should write all of the components together. I'm stuck for an example but in English you can sometimes get ambiguous sentences caused by the fact that compound nouns are often open (written separately). It also makes spelling a bitch in English. Should it be containership, container-ship or container ship? In most Germanic languages it is always going to be written "containership".
