Growing up in Austin was fantastic. i know it's just a trip, but there's tons of summertime activities/camps to keep them busy between school years, for outdoorsy kids, nerds (child larping), science, rock and roll, more than you can shake a stick at. Central Hill Country rules for daytripping+hiking. Also chiming in to say Austin is very queer friendly (rip leslie)
Not the most walkable. If you get a hotel near downtown or campus you should be alright though.

New Orleans is my favorite city by far. Great food, great people, it's a beautiful place. The Garden District, uptown, the Marigny, parts of the French Quarter, Bywater. No other place like it. I get to work there every couple of years, thankfully. I have fun just driving around the different neighborhoods. That city has real character.

Avoid Kansas. Everyone here is fucked up about that still. Ok not everyone, but it's still a little ridiculous.

Virginia is fine, just avoid areas where money seems to be scarce

Massanutten is badass if you're into the outdoors thing, a few hours away from Richmond though
