It should be an easy one. Same shape, same mounting holes, two humbucker cuts centered in where the stock cutouts are, nothing else (no switch, no height holes).

Did some actual shielding while I'm waiting for something cool to happen.

So I'm waiting for pricing on the pickguard...on one hand, it's silly to spend $40-60 on a custom pickguard, but I think pickguard-mounting the lipsticks would look much better...

But here's what I was going to do. Definitely the cheaper and easier option.
(Though it'd require grinding the baseplate tabs down a bit to fit in the humbucker rout.)



BTW, for those not following closely, it's NOT going to be a humbucking pair. I'm using two of Duncan's hotter bridge pickups here, for max output, and using a RWRP middle pickup as one of the two pickups in neck pair. That way, with some clever switching, I can use that RWRP for hum-canceling with one of the bridge pickups, or hum-canceling with one of the neck pickups.

Had to at least prove (to myself) that the guitar could be modded with just new pickups, no new pickguard or extra parts.

Here's an obscure Jazzmaster hacking tip...SD's lipstick pickups' mounting screws aren't long enough to hide the lipsticks under the Jazzmaster cover (even with longer screws, the cover is shallow and the rout is shallow. Flip the Jazzmaster cover upside down, screw the pickups in backward, notch the JM cover so the wires have somewhere to go, put foam underneath the Jazzmaster cover and screw it in!

There's the hacked version--no extra parts, just replacement pickups.

I think flipping the JM cover around is a super easy way to pop in non-JM pickups and still have them be easily height adjustable. A little weird looking with the exposed mounts, but if Mascis/Greenwood/etc did this, everyone would be doing it!

Couldn't resist doing a pickup test! Plus, I've gotta see if it sounds good enough that a custom-cut pickguard would be worth it.

I decided to put the bridge lipstick (the one closest to the bridge) on an on/off toggle. I don't like bright bridge pickups, but I might want to flip it on along with some of the other combos.

So the 5-way goes:
Single coil - Neck lipstick.
Hum-cancelling - Neck pair: neck + inner-neck RWRP lipsticks.
Single coil - Inner-neck RWRP lipstick.
Hum-cancelling - Inner-neck RWRP + inner-bridge lipsticks.
Single coil - Inner-bridge lipstick.

Then toggle on/off the bridge-most lipstick in any of those positions.

It sounds great! I've gotta get these 9s off it, cause they're sloppy and I want to tune to D standard, but the clean tones are already sounding awesome (as are the fuzz tones!). I've loved the sound of lipsticks since the Dano Hodad I had in high school.

Yeah, lipsticks were always the draw of the Dano guitars at my local music shop growing up; but the rest of the guitar never lived up to my expectations. (and therefore I never bought one.)

Trying to think of a good project guitar to put lipstick pickups in for myself. Telemaster with neck double-lipstick with split-single/humbucking switch?
