Also, Dwarfcraft Devices The Great Destroyer rocks for grindy, glitchy octave down destruction, and you can starve the voltage for rhythmic oscillating/skipping madness...It has tons of low end too.

I used to have two and am on the fence about letting go of the second one, even though it's in b/s/t. I swear I'm not trying to push all my pedals off on you.

+1 on the SM with bass. It's definitely in muff territory, but gainier. It gets really interesting if you get one with the chaos switch. I happen to be selling one too...

For budget bass fuzz, I recommend the Hyperion and the VFM over the SM. But also consider trying to either find or have someone build a fOXX Tone Machine clone. They are so fucking awesome on bass even on standard mode, and the octave mode is gravy on top.

Really? I found the SM had a little more low end than the Hyperion. The Hyperion is awesome though and the Hyperion 2 is extra awesome

The cool thing is, if you flip the emitter and collector of the fourth transistor you can switch between SM and VFM

I actually agree with you that the SM has a little more low-end, but I find that low-end isn't usually the problem, it's more about the EQ'ing in the mids that kills bassists. And I always felt like the VFM and the Hype cut through a bit better than the SM.

And yes, I did buy that Tone Machine off of you, and I am damned glad I did. It basically allowed me to sell off like 3 other fuzz pedals that covered similar ground.

The behringer synth pedal and expression pedal, plus maybe a DOD Bass Grunge Pedal. I have heard a local bassist that uses one and his tone is pretty fat. They are a punkier band as well. I think all of this will fly in under your $150 budget.

Someone mentioned the Behringer Bass Synth...It's actually a clone of the SYB-3 from Boss. At the price, it's worth picking up 2 or 3 of them.

I like the Bass Synth Wah from DigiTech, I had one for a long time. It doesn't get really synthy, which is probably why some people don't like it. It's pretty much like plugging into a synth's filter section and that's it. Tracks pretty well down to D on octaves, but it can get muddy on the lower parts.

If youre in a 3 piece, may consider an EHX Micro Pog to add some upper octave and maybe a tad bit of lower octave to fill everything out.

And a good fuzz wouldn't hurt. If you're handy with a soldering iron, I suggest building her the Brassmaster kit from GGG. It's the closest thing to the original I have found, even over the B:Assmaster.

To my mind, I'd run a gated fuzz into a filter if I was going for "synthy."

I'd also consider an octave fuzz. They usually have a lot more bite than other fuzzes. I played bass through a Zvex Octane 3 clone and it sounded great. Nothing subtle about it, mind you.
