Yes, but if he is really fucking up and your friend, you ought to tell him. Friends are the perfect bearers of uncomfortable truths. Some might even say it is your duty to tell a friend he's on the wrong track. I myself am more of a lassez-faire guy because I hate confrontation but in theory that is one of the things friends are for.
You brought this to a whole different level. Maybe you should offer him a spot back in when he's better? Maybe point out possible treatment, listen to why he is mucking up his life like that, whatever. On the other hand there is a purely professional level your band. You can't have him spoil the fun for you and the drummer.

Not to mention that touring involves a lot of tedium and downtime, which can be really hard on people who're struggling with substance abuse.

one reason i gave up pursuing success in music in my 20s was that i realized that i was too psychologically fragile for the Get In The Van lifestyle and would either have broken down or wound up on junk because i couldn't take it. the road is no place for broken people; unfortunately, broken people also make some of the best art.

My bass player smokes weed before rehearsals/gigs... there's no problem with that for me as long as he plays the shit and he's kinda GOOD, so no problem so far... but it does make me watch him very closely
everything has been said i guess... if it's a problem for you, either he cuts it or you cut him
not literally though

I've found this works for most ALL band related firings and getting someone to leave.

No doubt. Likely going back to the 2 guitars/no bass lineup i had before....
speaking of this whole firing fiasco....bro calls 30 minutes after our usual Thursday practice sesh had started. Saying "what's up, howzit going?" He's on his way like 4 hours east to some music festival....didn't even let us know he wasn't showing.
My drummer's like "this makes it even easier!" We also talked to the band he was kicked out of before he joined us - the reason? He's a damn drunk all the time and just couldn't hang...

i always liked the way the Jefferson Airplane did it with their original bassist, Bob Harvey...they played all the time at the Matrix, a club in which singer Marty Balin had a share, and which had a mural of the Airplane in cartoon-esque SF style riding in an early airplane. one night Harvey showed up for a gig, and the mural had been repainted so he was out of the plane and hanging on to the tail.
