i loop little short phrases all on top of each other to get a big, thick sounds with my flashback. it gets the job done for what i do. lots of layered tremolo picking with trebley fuzz after my cruzer analog delay with big muff crunch underneath.

dubkitty wrote:the way i think of it really is different from piece to piece, i.e. from application to application. i have a piece where the loops do bass, guitar, and faux organ chords with chorus/"Leslie" for Pink Floyd vibe, and another where choirs of pedal-steel-esque notes pick out a background against which faraway horns fade in a two-chord change that bass pedal tones then invert. i'm particularly fond of taking long melodic passages and breaking them up into rhythms which get introduced one at a time so the passage gradually materializes out of seemingly random or simple notes...i've been influenced by the late 20th-century minimalist thing, Steve Reich and Harry Partsch and Gavin Bryars, and by electronic dance music as well which was heavily influenced by the Minimalists. i like music that appears out of the fog.
BTW sonidero, i could have listened to like 8 or 10 minutes of that.
This is all very nice. I've had the idea along these lines for a while, setting up long parallel loops and such becoming apparent over time... I could probably up my possibilities somewhat by throwing the HOG in before the loop chain, as opposed to after...
To be honest, when I first started doing it, my only influence was "not Andrew Bird", and setting up drones like Stars of the Lid, but not as deep, or pleasing.
It's only more as I delve into it that i see the possibilities inherent. I mainly want to use it as an instrument, as opposed to having it dictate how I play my music.
ALSO: Steve Reich all day.

I do what I like to call "Wrecking Ball Looping"
My chain gets split to the boss Loopstation and a DL4 (because my co-guitarist stole my SMM/H) and then each of those two pedals goes to an amp. DL4 to the bass amp, RC-20 to the Twin Reverb.
The main thing is NO SYNCING! Never ever! Every time I loop on our new album/set it hinges upon being asynchronous. The second main thing is building walls of sound out of tiny pieces. Having these tiny building blocks in stereo and out of sync makes them seem even bigger. ON one of our songs after I'm pretty much at "maximum wrecking ball" I'm doing a lead on the guitar (with fuzz and delay, of course) and THEN I kick on the Dr. Scientist Reverberator set SO LOUD that it totally pwns the loopers, and you only hear my live guitar through the amps.
Then I made a special "double murder" box to ground both lines to the amps at once, which I stomp at the end for that extra-hard cutoff action.

(doubel murder is out of frame here. But it doesnt look very cool anyway.)

Someone said post clips for showing off...I only play bass in this band so I don't feel like a total skeez doing this.
We loop parts and dub on them, but only for brief parts. We have at least a few songs where the loop is thrown into double time to give weird twinkly sounds. Gotta love the line-6 loopers.
I think the first looping stuff is around 0:50

Yes, that what i did in my former band (see slowgold in signature).
First i tried with just one amp playing both, the loops and the "live" guitar. That was at the rehearsal for the drummer and even myself not really loud enough. And not good to distinguish. So i wired up two amps: one for the loops the other one for the "live" stuff. That worked very good. Nevertheless the complete band has to be clear about, that the loop is the timing "god" and everybody has to play based on that.
I think russian circles are doing it the same way (two amps setup).
If it is working, it is fun like that. But i do not want to go back. Now i have the loops synced to the click (from a laptop) and that is a lot more reliable - at least for me.

i'd think that trying to do songs with loop layering for parts that way would demand a clock pulse, a godlike drummer to follow the initial loop length, or a quantizing looper. i can see doing it without a net, but it'd be pretty tenso.

...well You CAN adjust the loop tempo with the Boss RC-50, a bit. Especially if it's properly fuzzed. So You still can follow the drummer in many cases.
I bought the RC-50 when I split from my bands for a sabbatical for family. Used it with a laptop and an old drum machine, played solo stuff for a few years and recorded demos for future use.
Nowadays... with crazy bad ass fuzzes that absolutely KILL the headroom of the looper if layered (a single track of Dwarfcraft TGD or Devi SPAE into that and it DIES without an extra DI box to drop the levels). It's getting more and more time as an instrument of its own providing background noise of pre-recorded stuff.
What I'm sorely missing would be an fx loop for the looper samples, since I didn't like the fxs of the new Boss.

Should probably make CRAZY setups with an extra pedalboard

We have to talk about it with the guys... but i mentioned it yesterday and they seem pretty into it... the only problem is the tempo
and eventually the second amp

I imagine looping the Minituar can get pretty intense...

I forgot that that new Vox Lil' Looper has two independent loops to it... not sure how that works with only two foot switches.
