It's really not all that cool here... Seattle or Portland is a better choice if you want cool.

I approve of Wisconsin. But it's definitely my home for life. Other people may not buy into its charms or its winter weather.

if you're into the ocean and can stand winter weather, consider one of the cities on the Great Lakes. i grew up in Chicago, and Lake Michigan is so huge it's like living on an ocean front.

Plus Chicago is slightly cheaper than NYC but people all still are constantly agitated and complaining about 'tourists'. Oh, and the city is large enough to pull in bigger acts, while the city population is large enough to support a primordial petri dish of constantly changing subgenres and experiments. You might be able to find your tribe in Chicago by playing the music you want to hear to a bunch of likeminded folks.

About Savannah... I've lived here since 2001, transplanted from Chicagoland.

Savannah is a pretty small place-- ~135k in the city, ~350k in the area. Tourism is one of our top industries. Our music scene seems to cater to tourists. I drive through the major tourist areas several times a day. Most of the tourists I see are middle-aged or older. They don't seem like the noise/doom type.

SCAD is huge here, but it hardly feels like a college town.

Crime is high.

Racial disparity is great (in the "lots of it" sense).

The beach is close.

We cater to alcoholics.

If you're going to Wisconsin, you have two choices: Milwaukee or Madison. Madison is much more of a hippy/college town while Milwaukee is far more industrial but has a certain humble charm that I actually really like. Wisconsin in general is far from the clique-y kinds of attitudes I've heard about in the Portland, Seattle region.

And the two cities are about an hour and a half drive apart so between the two and surrounding little towns you've got some sort of noise/doom scene. Milwaukee's East Side/Brady Street area is the "hip" part of town and is where you'll find most of your semi-hipster/stoner/college musician types that would want to play something like that. A lot more post-hardcore/screamo bands in the area though. Milwaukee also has the Borg Ward which pretty much caters to ILF's collective tastes and is a really chill venue (and is where ILFest was held last summer).

This thread reminded me of how much I need to get into the local scene. I gotta start going to random shows again!

Also, has anybody mentioned Chicago yet?

St Louis has a pretty decent local music scene. there are quite a few places for locals to play, and a pretty strong experimental/noise scene.
national acts used to skip St Louis, but the last couple of years we seem to be getting more good touring bands.
it's total urban sprawl, 3 mil spread over 6 counties. public transit is not great. most places don't seem all that bike/pedestrian friendly, but there are some areas that are okay.
lots of gang violence in the city and northern suburbs. maybe getting better, but still a fair amount of gunshots.
the weather mostly sucks. it's usually too hot, too cold or too windy. ice storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc seem to be occurring with increased frequency.
most of the pretty girls leave town for college and never come back. or maybe they're just average when they get back. 5s everywhere.
all in all, I don't really like it, but it has enough pluses to make it bearable if you had to move here. I moved here for a job, I've been here 6 years, and it still doesn't feel at all like a place I want to spend the rest of my life.

I'll cash in on the Dallas/Ft W/Denton bandwagon. Harhar.

But Houston and a lot of East Tejas still have a decent hunger for doomy stuff. There's a lot of smaller cities that can support it in the area, too...like Beaumont...and it's not too far from getting to Houston and even NOLA. So you could string together some decent "tours". And if you're ever feeling like a douche for just a weekend you could play in Austin...and then once the douche is out of your system you can go back to the non douchey places that aren't Austin.

Just my two cents on savannah.....its great if you are looking for 18 year old girls. Scad is basically a pussy atm. Every time i go i hook up on with a different 10 every night. There are dece shows and really awesome parties. Everyone is pretty freespirited and i didnt meet too many dicks there. On the downside....the economic divide is ridiculous. Its dirt poor and rich living way too close to eachother and the college kids are somewhere in the middle....although all of them seem to be loaded. Over all it has way too much of the kitschy vibe going on....also youre going to get robbed eventually. If i were looking at a town like savannah...i would probably move to athens instead....maybe louisville ky as it seemed pretty cool the last time i was ther.
