This right here. If you're under 21 in the USA and you wanna get drunk at a rock show, it's pretty much the only way to go. Stupid puritanical liquor laws.

Also, a lot of American bars aren't very interested in having original live bands - DJs, jukeboxes and even karaoke are cheaper to host and easier to deal with. It's a problem in small towns up to medium-sized cities.

SPACERITUAL wrote:Donovans right. House shows are a chance to thrash shit and have a great time. They are especially awesome if you dont actually know the person who owns the house. Through various bands and projects ive played my fair share of house shows and they are always the most awesome shows you end up doing. It usually goes several ways

A. YOU KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE HOUSE

1. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Play totally drunk. Cops come. OK OFFICER WELL TURN DOWN. Drink for 10 mins. Crank amps and continue. Cops either come or dont. Who gives a shit at this point just make sure gear is in cars. Get laid. Puke. Bail.

2. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Some asshole named Tim whos gf you fucked a couple times but didnt really care about or anything so its totally outrageous that he cares shows up. Starts shit. Gets ass kicked by like 20 ppl who are screaming TRUE TIL DEATH BRO. Play but with additional song "tim is a faggot who just got his ass beat and also i fucked his girl". Keep drinking. Tims girl shows up mad that everyone beat his ass. You end up fucking her again. Bail before she finishes douching or whatever girls do in the bathroom after you nut in them.

3. Show up with gear. Drink for an hour or three. Start playing and shit gets thrashed. House a wreck. Cops coming. Grab gear/liquor/drugs/sega saturn and bail.

B. YOU DO NOT KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO OWN THE HOUSE

1. Show up with gear. Set up. Drink for an hour or three. Loot bedrooms when nobody is looking. Play WAY too loud. Who gives a shit if cops coming, not your house. Talk some bitches into leaving with you. Steal liquor/poptarts. Bail

2. Shit is hostile but show up anyway. Drink, start playing. People are dicks so start swinging headstock wildly taking random chicks/bros the fuck out. Throw bottles/mic/full cans of beer/tvs into audience. Fight. Grab shit. Bail

3. Show up with gear. Get waaaay too drunk. Start being a dick. Swinging headstock, crosschecking ppl with guitar. Puke on some girl. tear holes in wall with bridge of guitar. finish playing. Gear in car. LETS KEEP PARTYING. Turn living room into wrestlemania. Start lighting bacardi 151 on fire. Light kitchen on fire. Bail.

wish someone would compile all the awesome shit jamie's posted.

I think it makes a larger impact if you live in a shitty area for "real" shows. House jams are/were a whole lot of fun, though.

The best night our roving gang of pirates had was two-hundred dollars of free booze after a party in Allston(? might have been mission hill) that had everyone hiding in all parts of this crazy, three or four story interconnected apartment building for an hour-ish while the cops searched the place. When the dust was settling we wandered up from the ghetto-ass laundry room at the bottom of one of those ancient tiny and incredibly tight spiral staircases that show up in these places into the kitchen--deserted, naturally--grabbed everything in the fridge and high-tailed it.

I think our set was something to the effect of Ween's Awesome Sound for half an hour and a Tiny Tim request we had no idea how to play.

house shows can be great, sweaty, beer fueled nights of insanity, but they can also be depressing when they are lame. i remember being on tour & playing a house show in Maryland, where we played in someone's laundry room to about 7 people. harsh. the good ones really stand out in my memory, though.

unless those seven people give you 20 bucks apiece to pay for gas & food, it sucks...it might be fun, but it sucks.

Actually, played a show at the crustiest, sketchiest house I've ever seen, in Kansas City, to like six people. One of those people bought a shirt and a CD, and since we were touring in a Ford Focus hatchback (yeah, four person band, everybody had amps), that one $15 purchase gave us enough money to get to our next stop. And, this was last summer.

My buddy hosted Parasytic a couple years back to play his house show. We bought them food and beer for it, plus a few people snagged some merch.

And they blew the fucking doors off the place, then we all ate vegan sausages(?) and drank PBR. The only downside was this one babish crusty chick being all like "I want to hear something faster" when we had the doom band playing. She was hot.

Oh, and since I finally got them, here's some photo's of a "house show" that same dude put on in september.

Lineup was Gristmill, Falls of Rauros, Thou, and Wolves In The Throne Room:
