i sometimes like big or big-gish parties if they're in places like apartments where folks can break up into smaller sort of compatibility groups, but the bunch-of-people-in-a-warehouse thing...no. i like situations where you can actually talk with other folks and get some idea of who they are as human beings, not just shout over the general din or perform social kabuki. that was one reason i wearied of the rave scene: it was difficult to really see and communicate with people at the events and in and around the venues and that really fucked up the interpersonal aspect of the events.

Yup, pretty much this. I usually get a cup, and pour myself beer, and then pour it into my roommate's cup, and drive him home after. He has a never-ending cup of beer.
Also, I fucking love playing house shows, which are just parties with bands. Had one recently, and one of the drummers in my band decided to play guitar, and the guitar player, drums (primarily because it was a fucking dumbass party, and we sure didn't give a shit about the show itself).

Yeah, playing at house parties is the best because nobody cares what you do as long as there's music and a few noise complaints. One time we jammed some random noise and recruited several other friends there to just scream, rap (badly) and hit things to make noise. The police had to wait at least 5 minutes before anyone heard them knocking on the door!

I hate big parties and packed bars. I don't like being in a crush of people, and I like being able to talk quietly.

Twas a Halloween party, so, yeah, not even sure what was up with anything in that. And, really, when a band isn't playing, they're the same experience for me. But, I have fun.

For the most part, I like smaller shindigs - 10 - 16 friends tops. But there are exceptions. When I saw Guided By Voices on their "breakup" tour, it was like a huge party, and it was great - everyone was happy & offering to buy each other drinks, even though nobody knew anyone else. And the band rocked. Same thing for the 5-year anniversary for my local record label (albeit at a smaller venue) - packed house, amazing vibes, everyone was happy to see everyone. And my favorite area bands played some of their best sets on record.
So I guess I only like large parties when I like the bands playing, and so does everyone else who's there.

Huge parties can be a drab, really - there's a greater risk to run people You'd rather not have around. Like shitfaced idiots You'd rather stay away like any crazy ex and her asshole boyfriend who tries to pick up a fight.
