I'm not even angry, I'm just impressed.

Also, thoughts on the Watchmen endings (book & movie?)

I love the ending of the book, myself. the
NSFW: show
giant space monster from absolutely fucking nowhere is an excellent use of deux ex machina. I have friends who despise it, though.

It's great. Totally unexpected, yet a sort of "how did I not see it?" sort of thing.

The movie just didn't have all of the little end-chapter additions that seemed so unimportant. That's why I think it was such an exemplary example of the genre, parts of the narrative simply can't be translated to any other genre. It made sense that they changed it for the movie, but it also just seemed rather underwhelming.

Agreed. I also hated the soundtrack of the film--a lot of those songs were/are more important than just fodder for a comic book movie (which is ultimately what the film ended up being for me), ya know?

to be fair, i think it could have worked as a Mini-Series.

the uniqueness of comics, in my opinion doesn't lie in non-sequential narrative, but rather pictoral narration, like in Jimmy Corrigan and Christ Ware's work

I am a little new to Comics as I never got around to collecting them when I was younger. My only fix were from cartoons and lots of super hero games from when i was younger, where I would compulsively play them over and over. I recently bought some Comic Apps for my IPad (I know, not the same) and have been trying random ones.

It's slightly tedious trying to find the right place to start as there is so many around

Hey Guys!

I've been working at Cognito Comics, a digital comics startup for the last few months, and we've launched our first book for the iPad today!

CIA: Operation Ajax is a Cold-War era spy thriller about the CIA's involvement in the overthrow of the Iranian government. Inspired by Stephen Kinzer's All the Shah's Men, Ajax is a 200+ page comic built for digital from the ground up, and incorporates video, audio and multimedia to create an entirely new kind of comics experience.

(This all sounds like marketing copy. Maybe it's because I'm the business guy and this is how my brain works. Sorry 'bout that.)

That being said - I promise, y'all haven't seen a comic like this before, and for the next two weeks, it is 100% FREE (no ads, no in-app nonsense, no strings at all) and then goes up to full pricing at a whopping $7.99 - which is a heck of a lot cheaper than most comics out there these days. I'm really proud of the work we've managed to accomplish and would love for y'all to check it out and send me your feedback!

Thanks for looking, everyone!

That actually looks really cool.

I'd get it but I don't have an ipad. :(

Thanks for looking!

I feel your pain - I don't actually own a tablet myself, and I have an Android phone, so if I didn't work here, I couldn't get our own book, either. We're trying to get out on iPhone 4+ as soon as possible, and we want to get on Android, but that's really more technical stuff than anything else...

This is a question I have too, although I did recently read "The Dark Knight Returns" and really dug that. Will probably get "Year One" and "The Killing Joke" next. I'd like some more recommendations on Batman.

Anyone here read the Walking Dead? I got into it when I bought the trade paperbacks after the first season of the TV show. The comic is much better, just unrelentingly dark and miserable. Pretty much anyone can and will die in it, and I love that.

I like Preacher, Sandman, Fables, Transmetropolitan, and anything Alan Moore has done. Also I just bought one of the Cerebus books, as I've been told I'd really enjoy that. I'd like to get some Poison Elves but apparently that stuff is all out of print now. DUMB.

Fuckin' most "graphic novels" are just god damn glorified comics and shit, but there's nothing wrong with that. Sandman and Watchmen are fuckin' literature though. Believe THAT.

Graphic Novels are to comic books as Movies are to TV shows. It's the same medium; one carries one long story arc all in one installment while the other is episodic and serialized. Quality and literary value really have nothing to do with it. That is determined by the overall work as an individual piece devoid of genre.
