AJFA is pretty meh, tbh.

I don't care much for greg's need to be Mike Patton and I don't like their experimentations. the Ep they did with mike patton was alright just not that great.
1,000 times this.

Interesting. The only people I know who listen to Mastodon in my non-internet existence are people I've introduced them to, so none of them have listened to The Hunter or the new one.

Sorry I like to split hair. also Leviathan is where they lost me.
Different strokes, I guess. I love Remission and Call of the Mastodon, but feel like Leviathan is their peak.

Leviathan was definitely a change from Remission and the EP work, so I understand what you mean. Leviathan was the first big change, then Crack the Skye, then The Hunter.

After delving properly into Once More 'Round The Sun, I can actually say the only album I dislike is The Hunter. The new album is actually pretty decent. It's nothing on their past work, but it's a huge improvement over the washy and troubled Hunter record from 2011. Fuck, that was a trip I don't want to take again.
HEY DAN!

I can't even get through Once More Round the Sun - so I can't even give an informed opinion about it. The Hunter has a few tracks that I like, but the album as a whole is very meh to me. I still stand by Pelliott's argument (I think) that it's still leagues better than the other bullshit on the radio, so I still tell people to listen to them whenever possible.

Lifesblood ( I know it's not a LP but even when they released Remission they were doing their best to not play shit from it)
Remission
Crack the Skye
Blood Mountain
Leviathan

don't have shit else. I wish they stuck with their earliest carnation. Cause even after lifesblood. I won't say I was disappointed with Remission but I wanted more crazy stuff like Shadows that move.
I'm actually really surprised that you liked Crack the Skye at all.

exactly. it was nice and spiralling with many tasty bits for me to wrap my head around and enjoy. Leviathan might have been decent for me if.. hell I guess if it was the first thing I had ever heard from them. Cause when I first heard the songs which was live... them paired up with Ol Nessie, March of the Ents, Battle At Sea, Motherpuncher... just didn't stack up. It basically made them sound weaker to me.

I can see that being the case. The only time I saw them live they played CtS all the way through then a couple from Leviathan, Remission, and a Melvins cover.

i saw them twice in hattisburg and once in new orleans, in new orleans it was with dillinger escape plan with demitri still on vocals.

on a side note if you love some DEP but mainly just the first 2 eps and the first full length.. .then you might like Yog. they are from I think sweden... they literally just rearrange DEP songs. it fills a void for me when I want more dep but not what I've already heard a ton.

I've actually never been able to get into DEP or Converge...just never clicked with me.

fair enough. It's not for everyone, just like how there are tons of classic bands or albums that I just don't care about or only passingly listen to when I do cause while they are decent they aren't mindblowing or influential to me, though I can appreciate their value to other people.

Converge never clicked with me either. I can't even stand DEP personally. Lots of my friends love them though. Oh well.

Something about this discussion reminded me about how much I hated Pig Destroyer when I saw them live with eyehategod. Icepick high end, no mids, and enough muddy bass to not be able to hear what they were doing with their faster playing. We talked over them when I wasn't eyeballing people who were about to slap me in the face with their dancing. ....Wow, that was unrelated.

Glad you dig!

Never got to see Pig Destroyer live, recently had a chance but they have changed too much for me to care or want to see them. Basically when Phantom Limb came out they lost me...I did get that album but I was pretty disappointed their continuation of that made me write them off.

I really like Book Burner.

Phantom Limb is....somewhat challenging.

Although, I've not been graced with the opportunity to see them live yet.

EHG are playing like days after my surgery. So pissed.

Weird. I really dug Phantom Limb but thought Book Burner was fine but not memorable in the least. The songs just happen and then it's over, but I never really latched on to anything. I suppose it was probably because Phantom Limb was the first full album by Pig Destroyer that I owned and had only heard a couple of their older songs before that.

Yea I started out with Explosions in Ward 6. back when they were grindcore. basically when Phantom Limb came out they pretty much went from a grindcore band to a metal band with grind elements. instead of a grind band with metal elements.

either way that comp, and first two albums I'm all behind. after that... not so much.
