They make their money from war. If the government didn't need to use the military to wage war, they wouldn't pay soldiers to fight them/provide infrastructure for the people doing the fighting/fly the drones/occupy other countries/so on and so forth.

They literally get paid for waging war and/or being prepared to do so. You might say, they profit from war. You might call that being a "war profiteer," if you jive with grammar.

I'm not so hard line that you can't convince me otherwise, if you feel up to explaining to me why I'm incorrect.

Or did I step on your wee Texas toesies about God and Country and all that silly bullshit? :p

This.
How does a rich mans spare change thrown at a vet make you the profiteer? That itself is even irrelevant, seeing as the people who make decisions obviously will profit most.
P.S. It's called a draft, it sucks, but it's there. You can be called into the military.

I'd much rather there be mandatory service than an all-volunteer army.

Think about how fucked up that is. The people who are in the army actively want to be there. If Selective Service was actively brought back, there'd be a huge influx of people who would be acting like civilians, rather than mercenaries, and the whole thing would go to shit (ala Vietnam).

So I didn't realize how many of us here on ILF were completely worthless, entitled, ignorant sacks of shit.

This thread is like a coming out party for assholes and morons.

No positive contribution to the discourse, then?

Or are we not allowed to have differing opinions?

Am I back in the gulag/love nest?

I brought up Vietnam because there are a lot of things about that conflict you can draw from to illustrate how unsuccessful using a draft for manpower in a military can be. It turns a lot more people against the conflict a lot faster, which is not something people who're directing the war waging want.

Sorry if that one wasn't so clear.

Also, if this isn't super obvious, I'm not really taking any of this personally, nor am I intending to actively piss anyone off. I'm just looking for a little bit more of an explanation than "you're a fucking moron, dude."

I still consider y'all good peepz. Even if you're enlisted.

So you're saying it's better for young men to be forced to serve and die because it would more quickly change the tide of opinion against war?

No, I'm saying that the people in charge of the military and the politicians who have the capability to bring back the draft would never do it.

The politicians wouldn't do it because it's political suicide.

The military wouldn't want it, because it's much more advantageous to have an army entirely comprised of people who want to be there.

Ethically, as I'm sure is clear by now (I hope), I don't hold with joining the military. I find it pretty reprehensible and something that is never, in my opinion, morally justified.

I...I...just...

Let's not shit up the thread with more off-topic stuff. I guess most people would agree that the military is something of a "necessary evil". Just not many who would call joining up morally reprehensible.

You, you do realize that you're taking your problems with our countries leaders and foreign policy (Which I bet I would agree with you on in many ways), and transferring that anger onto the kids who fight and die for us, right? Many of whom didnt have many other options to begin with?

Truce accepted, but, again, this is a volunteer army. Suffice it to say I'd be much happier if no one joined the army, because no one has to. I'd also add that they're not fighting and dying for "us," they're fighting and dying for "their" foreign policy, and that misappropriation of "our country" is something that truly and sincerely pisses me off. I'm not asking these men and women to go out and "serve my country." I'm asking them to stay home.

The economics of joining the military is worth a whole 'nother thread in and of itself, so I'm happy to leave that one out of this.

Anyway, I still love ya, buddeh. Back to your regularly scheduled "camping out and protesting" thread.

Lol, this is almost the same thing I could say about this occupy movement.

"We're doing this for you too. You're one of us."

WELL STOP FUCKING DOING THINGS FOR ME THEN. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT I WANT.
