Yeah, im totally down with the whole "Art of the Board" thing , but it is nice to see some everyday warriors in there.
Like bare knuckle boxers vs WWE champions.
Yeah have to admit I'm not crazy about the custom BILF-assembled board, but it's all fun and games anyway. The one thing that drives me nuts is when someone orders $1,500 worth of stuff and then it's all in BST the day after the thing is over.

Does anyone really order in purely for BILF? That's crazy!

The best things about participating for me has been

a) trying out different combinations of just 4/10/15 pedals to find the most killer setup I can make within that limitation. I normally only play an enormo board with whatever my latest acquisitions are lazily patched in off the board in a really messy way. I don't really see what's wrong with assembling smaller or different entries to your day to day board for the competition.... it's all in good fun? Someone might really dig one of your smaller/larger whatever boards and get inspired to change/try something similar, and it might show you new ways of using pedals you've had for ages.

b) forcing me to ultimately assemble the chain/board I've been planning to put together for weeks but haven't had the gusto to carry it off. This was invaluable as I can now just walk in the room, plug in my guitar and go.

It's a magical time.

I don't remember that happening last year. I like bilf because I actually zip tie my shit underneath so it looks pretty. The rest of the year it's just a rats nest underneath.

I dunno man, second from the left on the bottom row is a little wonky. :p

Which brings me to a question - how do people choose their votes? Anyone have a rigid set of criteria?

What's amazing is all of those Metal Zones have the nicks and scratches in the exact same places. The amount of care it took to match the relicing on those pedals is insane. Matching relicing! INSANE. Winner winner chicken dinner.

Yeah I cant condone going the flip-for-bilf route... but I think an alternate, exciting approach is to try fooling each other with a board using your deep cuts. When your regular board is immediately identifiable due to custom/etch/vintage/wear patterns etc it's fun to mix it up and enter a head-scratcher or ambiguous board with clues :hobbes:

I basically send the same two boards each year, with slight variation. Think they're pretty easily recognizable, due to the etches and choices of pedals. But yeah, going through loads of pedals isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you enjoy it and aren't caught in the hype-stream, but I tend to dig boards that seem to have a clear idea/style behind them more.

Have we ever had an all purple board? I feel this could be the key to success

You'd at least get Chank's vote and that counts as 3 last I heard.
