Due to an upcoming wedding and the loss of a job, I'm selling off most of my euro [B/S/T ] and putting together this 42hp lunchbox

It should be a noisy little beast.

Any advice on where to start in building a basic modular rig to get into modular? I'm good with a soldering iron and I like DIY stuff and this seems like a fun way to get into modular.

Who offers good/affordable kits? - not sure if the two go together.

I guess I'd like to build (buy in this case) an enclosure, power supply and oscillator. I could use my other synths' filters.

I build a lot of stuff. Don't be afraid of SMD.

The flow of this set is so inspiring. Using modular as an open environment to explore; he does it with such narrative.

Would anyone here be interested in an Antimatter Audio Brain Seed ?
I'm planning to get a Teletype and it would fill the role the Brain Seed has now for me (and do other things)...

The Brain Seed is an awesome use of 4HP but it would become a bit redundant with a Teletype next to it.

There's no good answer. But that's exactly the size of my setup, and I have two VCOs and another sampler-type voice.

One filter, one low pass gate.

Dual envelope generator, two vcas.

But I think my goal with this system is a little specific, and might not really help at all.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

I want a brain seed, it's such a cool little module, especially for smaller systems. The teletype looks absolutely intimidating, would love to hear your thoughts about it once you get it.

It was one of the first VCOs I owned when I bought this rack locally: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/122586
But, to be honest, I sold it before I really fully understood it's potential; I was on a pretty big "west coast" kick and didn't think I really needed something that precise. From what I recall, it is incredibly precise, stable, and clean.

vidret wrote:what would you guys say is a nice relationship between filters, vco's, envelope generators and so forth?

Surely this matters on what you intend to do with it, I'm just trying to see if things would work out if I ditched my dark energy.

Let's say a 6U 84/104 hp system; would you have 2 VCO's? 4? 1?

Talking just VCO modules, not filters that resonate etc.
All depends on what you're trying to do with your system. For example, right now I have four (potentially five) voices in the 104hp/6u system I'm planning for, including modules that can produce percussion sounds (no explicit "drum" modules, keps things more flexible). Plus, all of those sound sources include some sort of additive synthesis component, so I can cut back on additional modules for timbral variety. The reason I have so many is because I want to focus the interlocking rhythms of many different voices, and right now I want to keep most everything in the rack (no external drum machine/synths).

But I'm working on a specific idea and forming constraints based on that, and my budget, and my work flow. Are you doing the same, or are you more in an exploratory mode? Are you trying to stay completely in the rack? Whats your work flow like? What are you intending to do with your system?
