I so want to get a Squier VI and throw a mudbucker in the neck. I know that I'll have to route the shit out of it, though, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

Well sort of. Looping fingerpicked chords and laying down fat bassy fuzz on top. Not a bad way to go.

What chord shapes and stuff are you using? I'm looking for some interesting voices that work better with the VI than power chords and such.

Super easy one: fret the E and A strings like you are playing a G major chord, two fingers. Move the root note around. Simple chord. With your ear you can pretty easily find a harmonic position for a third note to add to this on the higher strings.

A lot of the shapes I've been using are on the higher strings.

Really simple but sounds so good. Sounds good lower on the neck too, this is just where my fingers tend to go. I can almost play Jigsaw Falling Into Place with this one.

So moody sounding. You can also leave the b string out and it sounds good.
These are easier for me. I've been trying other ones out, trying to incorporate them into my jamming. The biggest challenge is making my fingers all land on the notes at the same time, but it usually takes some time to get it right.

I like doing those and then adding a fifth above the major third that's created on the A string, it gets really pretty but dissonant, I also really like chords like this:

in standard tuning because they get ridiculously heavy. I have a pretty solid handle on theory and stuff I'm more looking for weird/dissonant stuff or "this particular chord really suits the inadequacies of the instrument" I also tend to break apart any chord I play and have been doing a lot of arpeggios and sweeps as opposed to straight chord melodies.

Neon, all of those sound rad and I'm gonna have to try that out when I get home.

I found some interesting chords on a Sonic Youth forum, but they don't all translate well to a bass VI. I'll see if I can find it again.

I play regular chords (like bar chords, open chords, basic inversement (am I making up this expression?) and stuff like that) but I try to simplify them by taking out some of the notes / only picking a couple of the strings. Works nicely.

I like clean/slightly overdriven chords on the high strings with the neck pickup.

What the fuck happened to my Bass VI?
I haven't played it since sometime before the holidays and I go to play it tonight and the neck is totally bowed. Action is up a ton and the intonation is incredibly off
Do I just need to adjust the truss rod? How do I do that or should I actually get someone to set it up properly?

So, I went and got both flat wounds and round wounds. When my VI gets here, which ones should I put on and why? I've never played flat wounds at all, so I really don't know what they will do sound wise. Darker sounding? Smoother sounding? Dunno.

Duller sounding, less high overtones, less/no string noise moving your fingers. So yeah, darker and smoother basically covers it. I think everyone should give them a try.
